17/5/2025 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben, Doomben 10,000 day

Group l racing returns to Brisbane this Saturday at Doomben, with the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) attracting a strong field. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

2 Victory Win (Bet Now:  $SP.00) Won well two starts ago after racing wide throughout. Was a little disappointing last start when he jumped as favourite and weakened late to finish mid field at Eagle Farm. Happy to forgive that run back at Doomben which he seems to like a lot more and at a pretty good price I think he is the horse to beat in a competitive field.

17 Piraeus (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should prove hard to beat for Team Freedman after a win at Eagle Farm a fortnight back where he gave them a start and a beating, letting down with purpose late to win and win well. Good test here against likely types but confident he runs well.

6 Shihab (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is racing really well for Lawrie Mayfield-Smith and is one of the key threats after a placing at Eagle Farm three weeks ago when off speed and kept chasing with purpose in a good effort in defeat behind the in form Tavs. That form does read well for this and is a leading contender.

14 Banana Slide (Bet Now:  $SP.00) This mare has been racing in career best form of late and despite finding a tougher race I think she can continue winning. She has drawn well and should get a good run throughout transit and be hitting the line strong at a good price

2 Deep Respect (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should appreciate a rise to 1350m after resuming over 1200m a fortnight back at Eagle Farm when off speed and chased with purpose in the straight in a good effort in defeat behind Ser Joh, just missing in a close finish. Fitter and up in trip, he takes beating.

10 Winsome Star (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Symons/Laxon trained gelding that hasn’t raced since March 22 when giving them a start and a beating to win over 1400m at Eagle Farm. Two tick over trials since, the latest on Tuesday, looked strong pieces of work. Leading contender.

1 Pisces (Bet Now:  $SP.00) takes a power of beating here I say. He ran in the Hawkesbury Guineas two weeks back and he was one of the real eye catchers of the meeting, closing with real purpose when fourth to Media World. Hard fit, can settle closer in the run and be hard to hold out.

4 Apuntar (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is knocking on the door. I thought he’d run really well a fortnight back at Eagle Farm but gee the ride from Cody Collis was plain and the horse should have been right in the finish behind Pierata’s Gem. More positive ride, he’ll be strong late and can win.

6 I’m Heroic (Bet Now:  $SP.00) In a race I think will be dominated by those in the market, I think he is onbe to add at a bit of a price. Hit the line really strongly to win at the Sunshine Coast last start and I think he can put in another top effort here.

4 Tenzing (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is three weeks between runs for Tony Gollan since taking out the Brisbane Mile at Eagle Farm where he got a 12/10 ride by Regan Bayliss and in a driving go, finished best to score. Hard to knock the way he’s racing and commands respect.

9 Sibaaq (Bet Now:  $SP.00) In a race that has been hit with scratchings he looks to be the main danger to our top selection Tenzing. Despite the small field it is a pretty open race and a lot of it will be determined by the rides of each of the jockeys and the tempo in the race. I think they will go forward with Sibaaq and if he cant get some easy sections he will be hard to run down.

6 Osmose (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a GaiBott trained mare that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since Cox Plate Day when tailed off in the Tesio at The Valley. Given a good break, two trials under the belt, watch betting.

Doomben may not be his track, but I do think 1 Grafterburners (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a potential star. He was a big dope in the first prep and whatever he did there, for mine, was a bonus. Trial win last week was very strong and he’ll be charging late. If the penny has dropped, look out.

8 Beskar (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks one of the hardest to beat for Team Freedman after resuming in the Kindergarten several weeks ago at Randwick. He was just off the speed and presented to win but had a bumping battle with King Of Pop and it took away something from his finale I thought when third to North England. Fitter, back miles in grade/depth, he appeals.

10 Namaste (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Bjorn Baker trained colt that resumes after a three run prep in the Autumn where he placed each time and was good in defeat each time he stepped out but couldn’t quite win. Given a good break and his trial work has been strong.

9 Caboche (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the each way bet. He comes through the Brisbane Mile from three weeks ago where he got off speed and kept chasing with purpose in the straight in a good effort in defeat. Maps to settle much closer in the run and be effective late.

11 Manzoice… (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is there signs of life? He looked cast in Sydney but his run a fortnight back at Eagle Farm was very good, racing over 1800m and closing with real purpose late when second to Rising Pacific. Fitter and up in trip, he appeals.

12 Warp Speed (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one I can entertain for wider exotics. He ran behind Rising Pacific two weeks back where he got into a decent spot off the speed and tried hard but just lacked the class to go with them late. Not sure he wins, but he can run top four.

2 In Flight (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is bursting to win for Joe Pride and she gets a great chance here after a narrow second in the Gold Rush two weeks ago at Hawkesbury where she tried hard but just couldn’t quite get there when beaten a lip by Dragonstone. Hard fit, she appeals.

3 Kin (Bet Now:  $SP.00) ran a close up third in the race mentioned above. She got into a good spot off the speed and she tried hard but just failed to get there in a blanket finish. Fitter, has class and does get J Mac to steer, so she’s very likeable.

7 Navyonthehighway (Bet Now:  $SP.00) can bounce back. She resumed three weeks ago at Eagle Farm where she did far too much work on speed, copping serious heat, and was a beaten horse early on in the straight behind Hurts So Good. Fitter, up in trip, back to Mares grade, she takes beating.

I think the bet here is 3 Mazu (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for Joe Pride. There are better horses in this race but just not sure how well they are going at the moment whereas this guy is in winning form after his Hall Mark triumph at Randwick. He has run well in Brisbane previously and will love a wet track.

1 Overpass (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be given another chance. He comes through The Quokka at Ascot where he went too hard on speed and he tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through behind Joker’s Grin. Is there petrol left in the tank? Not sure, but he has runs on the board to be respected.

15 Lady Laguna (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a big price I feel. She attempted to lead throughout in the Hawkesbury Crown last time and she gave a strong kick from the front but couldn’t quite see it through when third to City Of Lights. She loves racing in Brisbane and the stable is flying.

3 King Of Thunder (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the runs on the board for O’Shea/Charlton to say he’s the one to beat. He comes through the Australian Derby where he was on the quick back up and just didn’t quite handle it behind a star, Aeliana. His tick over trial last week was outstanding and back to 2000m, class edge, he takes a power of beating.

14 Belle Detelle (Bet Now:  $SP.00) does get J Mac, which I find interesting given he rode this girl and King Of Thunder in their most respective trials. He goes with the filly, who was far from disgraced last start in the Oaks at Randwick and her trial was very good.

4 Beau Dazzler (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned well and should appreciate getting to 2000m after resuming in the QLD Guineas and he was one of the eye catchers of the meeting, closing off from the back with purpose behind Depth Of Character. Fitter and up in trip, he’s hard to beat I say.

BEST BET: Race Three Number 1 Pisces

NEXT BEST: Race Nine Number 3 King Of Thunder

LONG SHOT: Race Eight Number 3 Mazu
