Sandown Hillside will play host to a solid eight race card on Wednesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:40) Ladbrokes Mdn Plate 1300m
I’ll take a punt on 14 Oh So Far (Bet Now: $23.00), a Mick Kent trained filly that is on debut. Was formerly with Royston Carr in Tassie and didn’t really fire in two trials. Sent to Mick Kent and has had one Cranbourne jumpout. I thought the final 50m and through the line, she was good. Depth here isn’t strong so I’ll take a chance with her.
13 Derive (Bet Now: $2.50) is a daughter of Redoute’s Choice for the Ellerton/Zahra camp that is second up here. Resumed over this track/distance in a benchmark race when near the speed and battling away really in defeat when third to Safe Passage. Kah sticks and if she can overcome the tricky gate, she’ll be hard to beat.
4 Jack’s Honour (Bet Now: $17.00) can sneak a first four spot. Kept safe at odds when resuming over 1200m at Ballarat and I really liked the way she finished his race off when second to First Mate in a good return. Like him up in trip. Not sure I could back him to win, but feel he is a must for exotics.
Race 2. (16:15) Ive Print Hcp 1400m
Looks a race in two. Leaning towards 3 Frontman (Bet Now: $3.60) for the Freedman camp. Debuted over 1300m here two weeks ago and he didn’t really produce a turn of foot when clear but he picked up and surged hard late when second to Lightsaber. Gets a 2kg weight pull on that horse and with more upside to come, I’m in his corner.
1 Lightsaber (Bet Now: $2.90) does have a decent engine under the hood. Peter Moody trained colt that was a narrow second on debut at Geelong. Then went to 1300m here and under a lovely ride from Nolen, he wore them down and was too good. Creeping up in the weights but the extra 100m should be no issue.
7 Tatsuro (Bet Now: $17.00) needs to harness his energy better and if he is able to do so, he can be a knockout hope. Down the track behind Lightsaber in the race mentioned above where he got back in the run and just went way too keen in the run. He’s better than that, so giving him another chance.
Race 3. (16:50) Thoroughbred Club (bm70) 2400m
I’ll go with 1 Shepard (Bet Now: $3.10). He must have done something to please Moods from Saturday at Bendigo, where he was heavily backed to win and was given a peach steer from just off the pace. Presented to win but didn’t finish it off. I’ll trust the judgement of the trainer to back him up and form prior suggests a win is near.
2 Shoot For Coomah (Bet Now: $6.50) is a beauty for Richard Laming that continued the stable’s love affair with the Sapphire Coast when bolting up to win over 2200m during their Carnival. Lumped 60kg and did it with relative ease on testing ground. Was 1700m to 2200m there so you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
6 Under The Bridge (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Symon Wilde trained gelding that comes here as a last start city placegetter after running third over 2500m at Moonee Valley, getting back off the speed and chasing strongly when third to Guns Ablazing. Not sure I could back him to win but should be around the mark.
Race 4. (17:25) Clanbrooke Racing (bm64) 1800m
Really keen here on 3 Blue Ocean (Bet Now: $3.90) for Phillip Stokes. Good late fresh at Pakenham behind stablemate and subsequent city winner Moeen. Then raced over the mile here two weeks ago and worked to the line pretty well I thought behind impressive winner Flandersrain. Third up at 1800m I like and finds a winnable race.
1800m should be okay for 6 Holster (Bet Now: $3.60). Big effort in defeat last time over the mile, sitting wide no cover for the trip yet kept finding to run fourth, and was only beaten a couple of lengths. Like he has the extra time off to recover and despite drawing wide, does get Jamie Kah riding.
7 Night Passage (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Team McEvoy trained mare that had been somewhat disappointing when racing in Victoria I felt. Stable sent her to SA just over two weeks ago at Morphettville and worked home strongly late when second to Medieval Miss. Up to 1800m I like and if she runs up to last start, she’s in the mix.
Race 5. (18:00) Ladbrokes Back Yourself-bm70 1600m
Second up syndrome is a query with 4 Heart Of Puissance (Bet Now: $3.50), but class wise, I think he has a bit on these. Resumed over 1400m at Caulfield on Australia Day and was very good late off a long break when third to Regardsmaree, who has won twice since, so the form does read super and up to the mile is ideal.
8 Dirty Deeds (Bet Now: $5.50) looks suited third up at the mile for the Ellerton/Zahra camp. Comes through the Regardsmaree race mentioned above and he kept chasing from off the speed in a pretty good effort, running fourth. Does have a good record over the trip and third up, should just about be at peak fitness.
5 Saccharo (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing well and can win this without surprising. Last couple of efforts have been over the mile at Flemington. Wide no cover two back but was too classy for them. Then backed up a week later and was far from disgraced in defeat behind High’N’Dry. More likely a first four contender, but can win this.
Race 6. (18:30) Quayclean (bm78) 1400m
Tricky race to sort out with confidence. Going with 3 Evening Glory (Bet Now: $4.60) for the Freedman camp. Impressive winner two back at Caulfield before going to Morphettville where he didn’t get the rub of the green, finishing a solid third to a very much in form Taken Off. Jamie Kah back on and 1400m suits.
5 Imperial Lad (Bet Now: $5.50) looks to lead these for fun and that will certainly be no disadvantage on this track. Somewhat got control last time out at Caulfield and battled away pretty well when third to the in form Regardsmaree, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Leads comfortably and should take some running down.
2 Alpha Sky (Bet Now: $15.00) hasn’t been too bad in his past couple for Stephen Brown. Last run came at this track/distance where he had a suck run behind the speed and battled away pretty well when fourth to Good And Proper. Maps to get a soft run again and could well sneak a first four spot.
Race 7. (19:00) Mrc Members (bm70) 1000m
Looks to be a stack of early speed engaged here, so want to be on a closer and that closer will be 4 Bons Abroad (Bet Now: $4.20), who resumes for Kevin Corstens. Hasn’t raced since the Northwood Plume during the Spring at Caulfield when down the track in a hot Mares race won by Fiesta. Sprints well fresh, trialled well and the set up here just looks ideal.
10 Tarcoola Diva (Bet Now: $4.00) has to command respect. It was a moderate 58 she won fresh at Sale but to to the eye she was impressive and the clock agreed, producing some of the best late splits of the meeting, and when you’re doing that from in front, you’re cooking with gas. Keen to see how she goes.
7 Princess Flagrant (Bet Now: $19.00) is another that will close off late. Ran down the straight at Flemington last start and worked home okay without threatening behind likely type Zipping Boy. Think she’s a mare who is better suited on firmer footing, which she gets here and Jamie Kah rides the mare very well.
Race 8. (19:30) Remembering Ray Huxley (bm70) 1300m
Market will be interesting but I’ll bank on upside and natural improvement getting 1 Bel My Pago (Bet Now: $13.00) home. Talented mare for LIndsey Smith that had her first run in Victoria over this track/distance a few weeks ago and was a real eye catcher late from the back behind Need New Friends. Has a gate to use this time and if she can sit closer in the run, she’ll take some beating.
Shane Nicholls has 8 Knowles (Bet Now: $3.70) has the engine under the hood to take out a race like this, but she only has a short burst of speed, then paddles beyond that, so she’s a tricky one to sort out but she was good in defeat behind Ginger Jones last time and Jamie Kah rides, so she has a bit going for her.
Shane Nicholls has 3 Arigato (Bet Now: $7.50) absolutely flying at the moment. Really impressive win from the back fresh at Benalla before racing down the straight at Flemington where she was on testing ground and on speed, a set up totally against her norm, but she spanked them. One of the leading contenders.
