The best raceday in the Hunter comes around on Friday at Newcastle on the Beaumont track with their cracking program, headlined by the three blacktype races, the Newcastle Cup, the Tibbie Stakes and the Cameron Handicap. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (13:05) : NBN News Maiden Plate 1250m:

Back Me: 7 Irithea  (Bet Now: $2.60) was unwanted in betting when debuting at Wyong two weeks ago but she ran a cracker and went within a lip of winning, getting nabbed late. Should take good improvement off that and looms as one of the hardest to beat.
Big Danger: 8 La Chatte (Bet Now: $2.40) is a well bred filly who debuts for Godolphin who is having her first start off the back of a couple of quiet trials, the latest coming on August 30 behind Geneteau, a talented type who won recently. Interesting to note this filly is nominated for the Thousand Guineas and Caulfield Classic. If there are any kind of aspirations for those races, she’d want to be winning here. Market watch.
Roughie: 9 Not To Be Caught (Bet Now: $31.00) is a filly on debut for the John Sargent stable. She has had three trials to prepare for her debut, the latest on August 19. I think 1250m will be short of her best, but she has handy breeding on her side and she too has been nominated for some classy races.

Race Two (13:40) : Hunter Jaguar Maiden Plate 1250m:

Back Me: Like most, I thought 5 The Bull (Bet Now: $3.70) was a good thing when he resumed at Hawkesbury two weeks ago, but a combination of a wet track and a poor post race recovery contributed to his demise. Trial prior was outstanding and if he brings that here, he’ll give this a shake.
Big Danger: 11 Tivoli Street (Bet Now: $4.40) is a Chris Waller trained gelding that debuted at Canterbury and did make up ground late behind a potential star in Glenall. There is no horse in the ilk of Glenall here, and Waller has a great success rate on the Beaumont track, plus Bowman steers. Hard to beat.
Roughie: 2 Oakfield Rickie (Bet Now: $13.00) was well supported to win last time out at Wyong where he attempted to lead all the way but just felt the pinch late when a close up fifth to Bring Me The Bling. Knowing owner Bruce Mackenzie well, don’t be shocked if this bloke has a flood of support late, and he doesn’t like leaving emptyhanded on this day on his home track, more so given he sponsors the next race.

Race Three (14:15) : Mackas Australian Black Angus Handicap 1300m:

Back Me: 2 Peacock (Bet Now: $2.70) is the big watch for me here. He ran some really solid races in the Autumn, with the prep ending with a dominant maiden win over 1400m at Randwick. Latest trial, which came there, was outstanding and he looks to have really strengthened up since his two year old season. Has the potential to blow these away.
Big Danger: 1 Acatour (Bet Now: $4.00) kicked off his career in the latter part of the Autumn where he won well on debut before bumping into a handy one in Skylight Glow. Trials leading in have been pretty good and he has quality about him.
Roughie: 3 Calabasas (Bet Now: $6.00) ran in a small field of five last time out on his home track at Wyong where he sat on speed most of the way and gave a good kick but was pipped near the post by Helensburgh Ham. I think he’ll lead these comfortably, and on that basis, he’ll give a stack of cheek.

Race Four (14:50) : Harry Meyn Foundation Handicap (65) 1200m:

Back Me: Interested to see how 8 Artova (Bet Now: $7.50) handles this. I thought she was a good thing when resuming at Kempsey but she was tardy to get away from the gates which followed an alarming betting drift. The fluc was right but she was enormous in defeat. Not easy for three year old fillies against the older horses so early in the season but she has speed when she jumps cleanly and the Beaumont track more often than not suits on speed runners.
Big Danger: 2 Bachelor Heir (Bet Now: $4.80) resumed just over a month back at Scone where he sat midfield and sort of just stayed there behind the in form Mossman’s Gold, beaten five lengths but far from disgraced. Looked to trial well behind a couple of handy types last week at Wyong and Kris Lees loves to target the feature day on his home track.
Roughie: 1 Conquer (Bet Now: $6.50) ran a tick under three weeks back on his home track at Scone and closed off hard from the back in a small field/slow pace to finish third to Oscar’s Choice, beaten just under 1.5L. Looked to trial well last week at Wyong and back to 1200m is the positive I think.

Race Five (15:25) : Yarraman Park Tibbie Stakes 1350m:

Back Me: 3 No Pushover (Bet Now: $9.00) is a mare I am keen to see return. Former kiwi filly that was heading towards the Oaks in Queensland but after a long Autumn in New Zealand, she was tired and looking for the paddock. Recent Warwick Farm trial win was outstanding where she showed a lovely turn of foot under no pressure. Happy to have something on her each way.
Big Danger: 7 Frill Seeking (Bet Now: $10.00) comes through the Mona Lisa (1350m) at Wyong where she didn’t quite clear air at a crucial stage and I think she wasn’t entirely happy on the wet track behind Fitou. Firm surface is what she is looking for, which she gets here, and is a live threat.
Roughie: 10 Spirit Bird (Bet Now: $10.00) is a former Perth mare making her Sydney debut for James Cummings. Her form is at 2000m and beyond, so a race like the Matriarch on Stakes Day could be something for her, but she did look sharp in a Randwick trial win, with Cummings appearing to have put speed in her legs. Market watch for sure.

Race Six (16:05) : Australian Bloodstock Cameron Handicap 1350m:

Back Me: 7 His Majesty (Bet Now: $7.00) for me in what looks a cracking edition of the Cameron. He produced an unbelievable finish to win first up before cutting back to the inside and lumping the big weight when a closing fifth to Sir Bacchus. Gets much needed weight relief, and the only time he raced here was first up last prep when he won like Black Caviar.
Big Danger: 8 Chetwood (Bet Now: $2.80) gets his first crack at Stakes level as an older horse and looks one of the hardest to beat after two brilliant wins this time in, most notably last time out at Rosehill when ridden a treat by McDonald to bold up. He’ll be on speed rolling along and proving very hard to run down.
Roughie: 6 Decision Time (Bet Now: $34.00) is getting on in years but I think he could be one to include in exotics. He wasn’t too bad in the Show County behind Tycoon Tara but looked sharp in a Warwick Farm trial last Friday behind Dothraki, and he did beat Winx home under no pressure. He could definitely bob up in a race like this.

Race Seven (16:40) : XXXX Gold Newcastle Cup 2200m:

Back Me: 3 Singing (Bet Now: $4.00) comes through the Premiers Cup (1800m) at Rosehill where he was given every chance by McEvoy in the run and the horse looked home but he was nabbed late by stablemate Sense Of Occasion. This horse has form around Flintshire and Protectionist, which is world class form. 2200m is perfect, home track, upside…looks the winner.
Big Danger: 2 Sacred Master…(Bet Now: $6.00) well if you backed him in the Wyong Cup last time out, it was no betting on the turn when he loomed, but Slow Pace got the job done and beat him. Was the winner too tough, or was Sacred Master turning it up? Not sure, but this will be your guide as to whether or not he is a Metropolitan horse, or does he remain at this level. D-Day.
Roughie: 6 Ruling Dynasty (Bet Now: $16.00) is also facing his D-Day. After a ripping first up run, he has done bugger all in two subsequent outings, which forced James Cummings to trial him last Monday where he finished fifth of six behind First Seal. Steps up to an ideal trip and gets a relatively firm track.

Race Eight (17:20) : Suez Handicap (65) 2200m:

Back Me: 5 Mulinello (Bet Now: $4.80)  for me here in a tricky race. She ran over 1800m in a Hawkesbury maiden last Thursday and aided by a lovely steer from Victoire, the Makfi mare led throughout to win impressively. She’ll have no issue running the 2200m out, has upside and leaders will be suited on this track, especially if it remains dry.
Big Danger: 4 Another Snappy (Bet Now: $3.70) (ran a tick over three weeks back at this distance at Warwick Farm where he had lake market support and stuck on well when second to Chaquinta, who franked the form to win at Canterbury next start. Trial on Monday at Rosehill was solid enough to suggest he’ll be a contender here.
Roughie: 8 Rainbow River (Bet Now: $8.00) is a Taree visitor who ran over 1900m at Kempsey last Monday and closed off with purpose to run second to Sandy Waters, beaten 1.5L. Performed okay up to 2000m, so 2200m at this level is a risk, but at times he has shown really good ability.
