Spring is in the air this Saturday at Caulfield with the running of the Group ll P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) seeing the return of quality animals. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:15) : Anzac Commemoration Handicap (84) 2000m:
Back Me: 6 O’Lonera (Bet Now: $2.70) was solid in the market when racing in the VOBIS Gold Stayers over 2400m here a fortnight back and gee he was impressive, sitting on speed most of the way and bolted clear in the straight to spank them. Oncidium Ruler, who ran second, was luckless on Sunday so the form looks to have held up and the drop back to 2000m should be no issue for this in form stayer.
Big Danger: 5 Name The Day (Bet Now: $4.20) ambled to the front soon after straightening last time out at Flemington and though he took his time to put them away, he did and ended up drawing clear late of Diamond Duke, who ran very well in a handy staying race at Swan Hill on Monday so the form reads well and now he has that winning feeling under the belt, he can go right on with it.
Roughie: The best of the two outsiders engaged here is 1 Electric Fusion (Bet Now: $19.00), who ran last Saturday at Flemington where he sat on speed and faded late behind in form galloper Royal Rapture. He has a really good record at the track/distance, with his last run here resulting in a win over Extra Zero, albeit back in 2013. Small field helps.
Race Two (12:50) : Legacy Badge 2016 Appeal Handicap (84) 1600m:
Back Me: 3 Choice (Bet Now: $6.00) resumed against the mares here a fortnight back in a slowly run race and I thought she was a real eye catcher, warming up late to run fifth to Andrassy, beaten just over a length. Clearly looking for further which she gets immediately and looms as the one to beat.
Big Danger: 7 Kaniana (Bet Now: $2.80) ran over 1400m at Flemington last Saturday and I thought she was very good in defeat behind Nadeem Lass given she was back near last in the run and gave away an impossible start yet finished only 1.5L from the winner. Up to the mile is a big tick and she has upside. Big threat.
Roughie: 5 Savannah Moon (Bet Now: $7.50) is hard fit and in form. She ran over 2000m last Saturday at Flemington where she attempted to lead all the way but just tired late when a close up fourth to Yulong Baby. Back to 1600m is no issue, she’ll lead again, she’s hard fit and will be strong late.
Race Three (13:25) : Ramleigh Springs The Place To Be Handicap (84) 1600m:
Back Me: 4 Leica Day (Bet Now: $2.50) appears to be one of the better bets on the program. He resumed over 1400m here two weeks ago and closed off very strongly when third to the in form stablemate Ulmann. Not as much depth, and he is a proven weight carrier, so the weight rise is no issue. Hard to fault him.
Big Danger: 7 Magic Consol (Bet Now: $8.00) is finding it hard to win but he is racing quite well despite that fact. He ran over 2000m here a fortnight back and tried hard when third to Khutulun after giving that mare the perfect drag up into the race. Williams jumps on now and draws the paint. Can definitely knock this field off.
Roughie: 10 Aurum Spirit (Bet Now: $13.00) is a bit of a pest, but despite being eight years of age, he is racing pretty well. He ran a couple of weeks back on the Pakenham Synthetic and closed off pretty well I thought behind the flying Our Bottino. Hasn’t raced at Caulfield in over 2.5 years but he is in pretty good form and with luck he can figure in the finish.
Race Four (14:00) : MRC Foundation Handicap 1100m:
Back Me: 8 Ocean Embers (Bet Now: $3.40) produced a brilliant burst to win first up at this track/distance before chasing blacktype at Morphettville where she dashed up to win the race but the above average local Viddora kicked on too strongly. Back home now and being third up, she should be at peak fitness now and the speed engaged here looks as though it will really suit her racing style.
Big Danger: 5 Chiavari (Bet Now: $8.00) is a mare in ripping form at the moment for Nick Harnett. She has been given a six week freshen up since racing here where she looked the winner but was bloused late by A Lotta Love. Little break should do her no harm, she’s down in the weights again and maps quite well.
Roughie: 9 Cana (Bet Now: $13.00) is a mare that creates some interest for me. Handy type that resumes for Team Hawkes off the back of a couple of impressive jump outs at Flemington. She ran well in some quality races last time in and draws well to use her gate speed.
Race Five (14:40) : KS Environmental Vain Stakes 1100m:
Back Me: 5 Russian Revolution (Bet Now: $1.85) comes to Melbourne with a big reputation. He put together two from two in Sydney during the Winter and stamped himself as a serious Spring horse. Recent trial win at Randwick was outstanding, beating home a coming Group l winner IMO in Omei Sword. First time Melbourne way is the query, but he is in the right stable.
Big Danger: 6 Artie Dee Two (Bet Now: $4.80) is a runner that resumes for the all conquering Darren Weir yard. He had two runs during the Winter, starting off with a spank job on debut on the Geelon Synthetic before going to the Valley where he was wide no cover yet still got the job done in a race where the form has really held up. You can’t ignore anything this guy is training at the moment.
Roughie: 3 Cohesion (Bet Now: $41.00) looked okay in recent jump outs prior to resuming at the Valley where he just never got into the race. He is much better than that, fitter and did look pretty good in a quick jump out last Friday, so he should be fit. He can be a sharp improver here with luck.
Race Six (15:20) : Winslow Group Stakes 1100m:
Back Me: 1 Concealer (Bet Now: $6.50) is a very interesting filly. I was really keen on her in the Autumn and after the first up blinder, I thought she was close to a good thing in the Blue Diamond but she let me down badly, and then next start she raced liked a tired horse. Trial back in SA was fantastic and if she brings her best, I think she’s too good for them.
Big Danger: 2 Sword Of Light (Bet Now: $7.50) has the race fitness on her side and is a contender. She resumed here a fortnight back and worked home strongly late when second to impressive winner Derryn. Performed very well against most of these in the Autumn and is a threat.
Roughie: 5 Hot Dipped (Bet Now: $18.00) is a very talented Tassie filly that resumes here. She was too good for them back home before she stepped up to the big time in the Sires where she didn’t quite run the trip out behind Seaburge. Trial recently was great and 1100m is ideal.
Race Seven (16:00) : Back To Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes 1400m:
Back Me: 11 Mahuta (Bet Now: $4.20) looks the way to go for me here in what appears a very weak edition of the P.B. Lawrence. He resumed in the Bletchingly and was very good in defeat given he was wide most of the way and looked a bit flat soon after straightening, but he picked up and was lovely through the line. He should take enormous benefit from that and appears the safe play in this race. I am also scared stiff of Miss Rose De Lago, who has been trialling the house down.
Big Danger: 12 Suavito (Bet Now: $4.80) is the class runner of the field. The multiple Group l winning mare is first up for Nigel Blackiston and her Group l did come first up last time in at this track/distance. Her first jump out was encouraging, but I thought her latest jump out was just fair. I’ve seen her do better, so that’s the worry, but she is too classy to dismiss.
Roughie: 2 The Cleaner (Bet Now: $9.50) is one of the class runners engaged here. He is now with the Gelagotis yard and he did look very good in a recent trial win at Cranbourne, his first public hitout for the new stable. He was due to resume in the Bletchingly at 1200m, but 1400m fresh looks a better recipe. Doubt he can win, but he’ll give a stack of cheek.
Race Eight (16:40) : Lister Regal Roller Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: 2 Palentino (Bet Now: $5.00) is a very good galloper that resumes for Darren Weir. He took all before him in the Autumn, with the highlight being the gritty triumph in the Australian Guineas. Gotta carry the top weight but has the class factor.
Big Danger: 1 Fast ‘N’ Rocking (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented yet frustrating sprinter for the Hayes/Dabernig yard. He ran in the Bletchingly and the slow tempo set by Lord Of The Sky was really against him but his closing splits were very good. Just needs a genuine tempo to go close.
Roughie: 6 Taddei Tondo (Bet Now: $18.00) is a ripping mare for Gerard Moloney who is never far away from the action. She had the charmed run behind the slow tempo in the Bletchingly and rightfully stuck on well for fourth to Lord Of The Sky. Drawn out is the key to her and she will get to her normal pattern of getting back and charging late.
Race Nine (17:10) : Beveridge Williams Plate (78) 1400m:
Back Me: 15 Vostok (Bet Now: $5.50) jumped out well here prior to resuming at Sandown where he was just simply run off his legs when finishing midfield behind another horse that jumped out well here, Fabulonh. He was a very impressive winner in town second up last time in and he can be an improver here for sure.
Big Danger: 6 Mr Individual (Bet Now: $4.20) ran here last time out late last month where he was confidently backed and duly saluted, albeit narrowly after receiving a peach run on speed. First time against the season campaigners is the query, but he has a touch of class on his side.
Roughie: 19 Downhearted (Bet Now: $8.00) ran a strong second to Mr Individual in that race mentioned above before going to the Pakenham Synthetic where I think Newitt took a touch too long to press the button and that proved the difference. Looks really well placed here and is a clear knockout hope.
