13/4/2024 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Ascot, WATC Derby day

Nine races will be run and won at Ascot on Saturday for WA Derby Day. Weather is fine, track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

2 Show The Way (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top but not really a race I want to get involved in. Neville Parnham trained juvenile that resumed over 1200m here where he got back, wide with cover, before edging wider into clear air and worked home strongly late in the piece behind Battle Commander. Back to 1000m I find interesting but he will be strong at the end and this isn’t a deep 2YO race.

1 Battle Commander (Bet Now:  $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and take running down. He was an all the way winner a fortnight back over 1200m here, producing sustained speed from the front and gave nothing else a look in, winning impressively. Back to 1000m is fine and with his racing style, he’ll give himself every chance.

8 Areduet (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Rommel for Coreen Maynard that is on debut off the back of encouraging trial work, the latest being at Lark Hill over 950m and seemingly moved well enough to my eye. Keen to see what she does at start one. Market watch for sure.

4 Busters Free (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top for me. David Harrison trained gelding that resumed over 1000m here two weeks ago where he got a fair way out of his ground and was held up at times but kept finding the line in a really good effort and return behind Crippalenko. Not a noted second up record but off the return, he looks to be in for a good prep and this isn’t a deep race.

12 Enchanting Sound (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a key threat. She ran second to Crippalenko in that race mentioned above from a fortnight back. She got into a decent spot just off the speed before angling into clear air and let down with purpose when second. Natural improvement, Chris Parnham sticks, likeable.

1 Deetea (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Demerit that resumes for Dan O’Connor. This mare is first up, having not raced since Jan 6 at this track/distance when quite keen behind the speed and didn’t have the finale to go with them late in the piece. Comes here with fresh legs, no public trials, but can sprint well fresh. Watch the market.

Keen on 1 Baby Paris (Bet Now:  $SP.00) to resume a winner. Colin Webster trained mare that resumes, having not raced since the Gold Rush where she was just outclassed and didn’t really fire behind Munhamek, but it was a race that had good depth to it, far more than what she faces here. Trialled very well in readiness for her return and has a class edge.

2 Real Danger (Bet Now:  $SP.00) tends to race best when on speed so if that can eventuate here, she can run a much improved race. She is three weeks between runs since contesting the Rock Magic where she wasn’t able to find the front and that sealed her fate, finishing down the track behind Wild Belle. I think if she finds the front, outside speed at worst, she can bounce back.

5 Megami (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a talented mare that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since New Years Day when a closing fourth in the La Trice behind Yonga Lass. She is better suited over further but she has trialled well leading in, and if they go silly in front, she will be quite strong at the end.

2 Flower In The Wind (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is absolutely flying for Neville Parnham and is the one to beat. This mare is in a purple patch, winning her past two, the latest being last Saturday over 2200m here where she got the dream run in transit before angling clear and finished best to win well and was strong late to the line. 2400m is no issue and the way she’s racing, she’ll take beating.

1 Let’sdeal (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is 0/2 at 2400m but does have an element of class on his side. He ran in the Albany Cup last time out when ridden with intent, sitting on speed and tried his guts out but couldn’t quite get there when third to stablemate Currimundi. He was 1500m to 2100m so with that run under the belt, he’s better suited here.

6 God’s Garden (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one I can entertain for wider exotics. She ran over 1800m here two weeks back where she didn’t really get the rub of the green and was never really a factor but she should have finished a touch closer. Unknown at 2400m but she brings different form and I feel has upside.

2 Sapphire Street (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes back to 1400m but she is flying for Dan Morton and should take beating. She is four weeks between runs since racing over the mile here where she got back to near last in the run and made up really good headway late in the piece behind Knot Secret, beaten a length. Back in trip and a tricky gate, but she’ll be strong late and take beating.

1 Influencing (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is 4/4 this time in and should be around the mark. He was a track/distance winner from three weeks ago where he led throughout and was there to be run down but he found under pressure to fend them off and prove too good. Harder here, more depth, but hard to knock the way he’s racing.

5 Cool Memory (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is several weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where the market took a set against him and he ran accordingly but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Angel Undercover. Up to 1400m with the break between runs I find interesting but his best is good enough.

9 Oly’s Choice (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks ready to win to my eye. I thought his run in defeat three weeks ago at this track/distance was very good. He was wide no cover throughout and was entitled to knock right up but he kept finding the line and was very good in defeat behind Hesket. Pike jumps on and with better luck in running, he’ll take holding out.

6 The Spruiker (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks better suited at 1400m. He ran a fortnight back over the mile here when just off the speed throughout and he tried his guts out but bumped into a potential Railway horse for later in the year, Tin Chooks, who won again last Saturday. Back in trip, can sit handy, dangerous.

2 Ice Pick Nick (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a query at 1400m but with his racing style, he’ll give himself every chance. He ran over 1200m here two weeks back where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick but just couldn’t quite see it through when fourth to Laced Up Heels. End of 1400m is a query but hopefully with a sit, he’ll see it out okay.

2 A Lot Of Good Men (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for Trevor Andrews. He just can’t greet the judge first. He tried his guts out in the Melvista but just didn’t have the brilliant finale of Buckets Ridge. He’ll have no issue at 2400m and if he can somehow settle closer in the run, he’s going to be a threat.

5 Buckets Ridge (Bet Now:  $SP.00) won the Melvista, albeit a surprising winner given he was $14 in the market and was coming off a down the track effort in the JC Roberts but in saying that, the Melvista win was dominant and Pike got the best out of him. He sticks and with no Zipaway, he commands respect.

6 Alaskan (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is one I can entertain for wider multiples. He seemingly had every chance in the Melvista but the run prior in the JC Roberts was enormous after doing work and perhaps he just came off it a touch in the Melvista. He can bounce back into positive form…doubt he wins but a first four hope.

7 Hemlock Stone (Bet Now:  $SP.00) seems the straight bat option for Team Williams. He ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where he got back off the speed before presenting into clear air and tried his guts out but couldn’t quite get past Exceltrain. Tricky gate, but Pike sticks, in form and this isn’t an overly deep race.

5 Recalled (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a talented son of Epaulette that resumes. He only had one run when last in work, which came at Bunbury over 1400m when back near last in the run and making up good ground late in the piece behind Cerridwyn. Good fresh record and despite no public trial, he commands respect.

2 Here For Cheques (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is resuming for Bernie Miller and is dangerous. He hasn’t raced since Jan 27 when a strong winner over 1500m here, getting a sweet sit near the speed and toughed it out best to score. Good record at Ascot and has somewhat residual fitness. One of the leading chances.

4 Karalee Rocks (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a talented mare for Colin Webster and is one of the leading chances here. She resumed at this track/distance three weeks ago where she got a fair way out of her ground but really liked the way she found the line late in the piece behind Think Of God. Has good upside to come and will take holding out if within range on the turn.

9 Becalotti (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of A Lot for Tiarnna Robertson that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since Dec 20 over 1400m here when on speed and tried hard but seven furlongs just found her out, tiring late. Been given a good break, trial work leading in has been strong and will press forward.

2 Kelvinator (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. He is four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when leading and giving a sight but couldn’t quite see it through, tiring late behind Rear Admiral. Good track/distance record and I think with a more patient steer, he’s dangerous.

BEST BET: Race Eight Number 7 Hemlock Stone

NEXT BEST: Race Three Number 1 Baby Paris

LONG SHOT: Race Two Number 4 Busters Free
