12/9/2020 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben

The feature race on Saturday at Doomben across nine events is the Brisbane Handicap (1600m), but the highlight will be the return of Alligator Blood, who will contest the 1110m sprint. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire circuit.

Hoping that 2 Aheadofhistime (Bet Now: $4.60) can hold the leaders back because if he does, he’s the one to beat. Resumed with a strong win over this track/distance before going back to 1050m and was a touch flat behind Mort Doyle. Hoping that Orman can kick up and hold the back of that horse, proving strong late.

6 Trengganu (Bet Now: $2.05) is flying this time in for the Sears camp but I must say she’s short at a tick over even money and I think has to ease out. Comes through a midweek race at Ipswich when bolting up and the form out of it has been good with a couple of winners. Gets in well after the claim, hard to beat…just too short.

5 Princess Cordelia (Bet Now: $8.50) is a big improver here second up. Mitch Beer trained mare that is a multiple Highway winner. Kicked off her QLD prep over 1050m here three weeks ago and was okay without jumping up and down behind Archer’s Paradox. Was very good second up last prep and can definitely win without surprising.

7 Amiche (Bet Now: $1.80) is building up a pretty good record for the Vandyke camp and I think she can win again. Has been really well placed by the stable right throughout her career, going through her grade and not really aiming too high. Lovely ride from Maloney saw her bolt up here three weeks ago and she’s just so reliable, especially given how the stable is firing at the moment.

4 Chico Milagro (Bet Now: $3.50) can mix his form but he’s got the engine under the hood to win. Blitzed them two back at Eagle Farm before racing here and I thought he had his chance. Was there to win and put them away but couldn’t finish it off and had to settle for a second to Chauffeur. Can win. Do I want to back him at a short-ish quote? No.

3 Tesarc (Bet Now: $35.00) could be an improver at odds for Mark Currie. Had specking at a price when resuming over 1000m at Eagle Farm a fortnight back but when they’re running near sub 33 for the last 600m, those behind had no chance. Has a good record at Doomben and with Stewart on, think he’s worth a look against these.

3 One Stryke (Bet Now: $10.00) for me in a tricky but competitive race. Son of Stryker that had a mini freshen up prior to racing over 1000m at the Sunny Coast just under two weeks ago when off the speed with cover and chased strongly late, but couldn’t quite get past Weboughtazou. Likes racing at Doomben, upside to come and draws soft.

10 Fisticuffs (Bet Now: $1.85) isn’t one of mine, but the jockey change/upgrade of Maloney replacing Justin Huxtable looks a positive. He resumed at Eagle Farm and once again, loomed to win, but half turned it up and had to settle for a third to Le Palmier. Blinkers go on first time, I dare say as a last resort. Market will be interesting to see what it does with him.

1 Piracy (Bet Now: $12.00) is a galloper I could entertain at a price. He comes through the Weboughtazou race mentioned above. He was on speed throughout and did try hard, but just knocked up late to run fourth. 1200m+ is when he comes into his own and with the claim for Alex Patis, think this gelding is really well in.

I think you have to be with 5 Good Chat (Bet Now: $4.20). Not sure he beat a great deal first up at the Sunny Coast, but he fair dinkum won it like it was a barrier trial and seemed to have plenty in hand. Times are a bit misleading given how easy he did it, so I think he’s more than capable of measuring up here for a stable that is lethal at the moment.

Class will carry 1 The Actuary (Bet Now: $5.50) a long way here. Tony Gollan trained filly that resumes, having not raced since winning The Phoenix and getting a blacktype win next to her name, so whatever she does from now on is a bonus given her life post racing is sealed. Still, think she has more to come and liked the recent trial.

9 Safework (Bet Now: $5.00) looks to have his share of talent and is certainly in the mix. Scott Morrisey trained three year old that ran over 1200m at Eagle Farm two weeks back and while he was never a threat to Kisukano, I liked the way he found the line late in the piece. Up to 1350m I do like and the depth is nowhere near as strong.

If 1 Impasse (Bet Now: $7.50) can sit closer in the run, he’ll take some beating here. Was a notable drifter in betting when resuming over 1200m here four weeks ago and just couldn’t muster any early toe, back tailed off last and only got warm late behind Junction. He can sit much closer in the run if need be and has an excellent second up record.

The best version of 3 You Make Me Smile (Bet Now: $8.50) is certainly capable. He’s now with Steve O’Dea and is having his second run in the Sunshine State after a pretty good effort I thought a couple of weeks back at Eagle Farm when fourth to The Candy Man. Think he gets control from the front and could prove hard to catch.

8 Voila (Bet Now: $9.50) can bounce back here. Impressive winner two back at the Sunny Coast prior to racing here three weeks ago where on face value, she was plain behind Phantom Falcon, but interesting post race that Dittman said the mare resented being inside horses, something she did when successful the start prior. Cahill jumps on and is drawn out.

Found this race very tough to sort out with confidence. The safe option looks to be 9 Top Me Up Again (Bet Now: $5.50), who has done little wrong this time in for Brian Smith. There was a bit of quality about his win last Wednesday. Market didn’t want a bar of him but aided by a lovely steer from young Huxtable, he finished best to win. Gets Larry back on, soft gate, likes Doomben, he’ll do me.

There was no fluke about the win of 6 Flying Machine (Bet Now: $6.50) from two weeks ago. Seven days prior to the win, he was enormous here when second to Run For Glory. He backed that effort up with a dominant win over the mile at Eagle Farm. Tricky draw, but if he can overcome that, he’ll take a power of beating.

3 Alpine Dancer (Bet Now: $11.00) deserves another chance. He ran here last Saturday and on face value, was plain behind Cloak, but keep in mind the tempo was a crawl set by that horse and those from the back had no hope, including Alpine Dancer. Hopefully a more genuine tempo this time around and form prior suggested a win wasn’t far off.

Going to give 6 Supergiant (Bet Now: $3.60) another chance. Talented four year old that was met with good support when resuming over 1400m at Eagle Farm two weeks ago but unfortunately for his supporters, he was caught wide no cover for the trip and faded out of the finish behind The Candy Man. Have to respect the market support first up and hope the rub of the green goes his way.

4 Toryjoy (Bet Now: $3.90) races best when she leads and does things to suit herself and even though Sabkhat is engaged, I think she can prove hard to beat from the front. Comes through the Rowley Mile where she was given a peach steer from O’Hara, but couldn’t quite finish it off when a close up fourth to Savacool. Think she’ll take some beating.

11 Articus (Bet Now: $16.00) isn’t one of mine but his best is certainly good enough to be in the mix. Kris Lees trained import that was two months between runs when racing over 1400m at Eagle Farm where he got back in the run and while he was never really a winning threat he did make up ground late, suggesting 1600m would be ideal, and the tempo won’t be a crawl.

This is more of a 1×3 speck, but at the odds, I think 6 Mr Marbellouz (Bet Now: $15.00) is worth that sort of play. He’s been outstanding in two runs back from a spell for Kevin Kemp, each time here and both runs he’s done a power of work on speed and been brave to hold on for a place. Jockey upgrade is significant and he’s bolted up his previous two second up attempts. Not declaring him, but at the odds, happy to bet 1×3.

No knock on 1 Alligator Blood (Bet Now: $1.85). He’s a star and has the runs on the board. But keep in mind that Summer/Autumn prep he had was a monster one and that prep came to a close in the All Star Mile where he raced like a very tired horse. Class may well get him home and he can go to Sydney and be competitive in an Everest/Golden Eagle. But looking at this race, he has to be a risk at the price.

3 Just Orm (Bet Now: $6.50) is racing in just about career best form for Tony Gollan. He has won his past two, the latest being three weeks back at this track/distance when lumping 59kg and he gave his rivals a spanking, albeit he had the dream run in transit. Gets down to 54kg, hard fit, in form, draws well…a chance for sure.

5 Sir Barnabus (Bet Now: $5.50) is a beauty for Jason Edwards. Tries hard every time he steps out and always gives you a good run for your money. He was never getting beat a few weeks ago at Eagle Farm. Put into a lovely spot by Jimmy Orman and from 600m out, he was the winner. Gets good weight relief and hard to knock his desire.

6 Aliferous (Bet Now: $3.30) has the form to beat these and beat these comfortably, but compared to Sir Barnabus, she has no desire at all, although you could easily make a case that with clear air, she wins the race at Eagle Farm two weeks ago. That was a blanket finish though, so a little query on that form and she’s a while between wins.

3 Satono Rasen (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Chris Waller trained stayer who really has done bugger all since coming from Japan, but I thought there were positive signs in the Eagle Farm race mentioned above, the first signs of zest for racing for some time, so if he can improve that little bit off that effort, he’s a knockout chance at a price.

NEXT BEST: Race Two Number 7 Amiche

LONG SHOT: Race Eight Number 6 Mr Marbellouz
