Eight races will be run and won at Scone this Saturday for their massive standalone meeting. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres from the 800m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:25) Kia Ora Stud Handicap (80) 2200m
I think 6 Equipped (Bet Now: $5.50) could be the way to go here in a tough race to kick the day off. I thought he was poison odds last Saturday at Newcastle for a horse with a horrible winning strike rate, but he absolutely bolted in, albeit aided by a soft lead, which is what he’ll get here if they go forward again. Hard fit, in form, I think he’ll give a sight.
4 Mazaz (Bet Now: $3.40) comes through the Provincial Final at Hawkesbury where he ran well in defeat behind a potential blackype winner in Roman Son, beating convincingly but far from disgraced. Scone 2200m looks absolutely ideal for this import and one thing we do know is that he’ll stay all day if need be.
3 Richard Of Yorke (Bet Now: $16.00) is the one with upside. Chris Waller trains this galloper, who resumed last Wednesday over 1900m at Canterbury and I thought he did a good job in defeat after getting well backed in the run behind Base Camp. He’ll have no trouble with the trip and can pull out a decent second up run.
Race 2. (13:00) Vinery Stud Handicap (80) 1100m
2 Cradle Mountain (Bet Now: $1.65) just has to go on top. Whatever Clare Cunningham is doing with this horse, it’s working. Heavily backed first up at Randwick on Anzac Day and won accordingly, bolting up and giving the track record a nudge despite being first up. Could easily be a Group l horse in time, but this is the big test because there are good sprinters engaged.
Looks a lovely race for 4 Malahat. (Bet Now: $5.00). Resumed over 1000m at Randwick on Anzac Day where I thought McEvoy gave the horse every chance in the run and for the most part he looked home but was nabbed late by stablemate Ozark. He’ll improve with the run under the belt for sure and 1100m at Scone looks an ideal set up.
12 What Could Be (Bet Now: $35.00) is an Alan Scorse trained gelding that resumes. This bloke certainly has the ability to go close to beating these, just all depends where he is at fitness wise. He does have a very good first up record, loves racing at Scone and the form from last prep just reads very well. Think he is a must for exotics.
Race 3. (13:35) Woodlands Stakes 1100m
6 Lady Of Shalott (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Camelot filly for Kris Lees who was very confidently backed to win the Miss Finland on debut at Muswellbrook and despite doing a bit of work in the run, she proved far too good for her rivals and spanked them in the end. Looks very promising and keen to see how she measures up.
3 Witherspoon (Bet Now: $7.50) is a well performed filly who resumes for Brad Widdup. Had a three run Summer prep in Queensland, culminating in the Magic Millions where she was outclassed behind Sunlight. Brings one soft 795m trial win here, but the talent is clearly there. Just depends if she wants to show it off.
7 Major Wager (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Waterbott trained filly who showed really good courage I thought to win last time out at Echuca. She was out of petrol tickets 150m out but she kept finding under Baster and got the win. She’ll be up on speed here and arrives to Scone with fresh legs. Happy to be with her.
Race 4. (14:10) Inglis 3YO Guineas 1400m
Perfect race for 1 Villermont (Bet Now: $3.50). I am hoping Ciaron Maher has realised that at this moment in tine, 1600m is probably too far. Yes, he won last time out at Doomben over 1630m, but he was helped by a lovely D Browne steer. Back to 1400m looks perfect, hard fit, has class…I’m very keen on his chances.
8 Moss Trip (Bet Now: $2.85) is a very good filly for the Snowden camp who was a while between runs when savaging the line to win the James Carr last time out at Randwick, sitting off the pace and finishing off hard to score. She does seem to be a really good fresh horse so three weeks between runs looks ideal.
7 Frolic (Bet Now: $9.00) is nearing a win I reckon. Her last couple of runs in the PJ Bell and James Carr have been very good from the back. Yes, hasn’t won, hasn’t won for a long time, but her late splits have been excellent relative to the respective meetings. If we get a fast run 1400m, I reckon she could have last say.
Race 5. (14:45) Denise's Joy Stakes 1100m
3 Sasso Corbaro (Bet Now: $4.50) gets the nod for me. Kris Lees trains this filly, who is first up here after a pretty good Summer prep. Won her first two starts in dominant fashion before sixth’s respectively to Pierata and Alizee, two of the best three year olds we have in Australia. Trials have been great and she is a bomb when produced fresh.
2 Resin (Bet Now: $6.50) is one of the better bred fillies in Australia and a blacktype win here would seal her life post racing. Won three on the trot in impressive fashion before being given a little freshen up with this and Queensland in mind. Trialled sensationally last week at Warwick Farm and I’d be shocked if she didn’t run well.
Β 6 In Good Time (Bet Now: $10.00) deserves a crack at some blacktype. She’s 5/5 for Tracey Barley and has been outstanding every time she has stepped out. Took on the big boys in the feature sprint on Tamworth Cup Day last time out and she bolted in, running great late splits. Hardest test to date here, but she’s earned it and always beware of the unbeaten horse.
Race 6. (15:20) Luskin Star Stakes 1300m
You’d think only bad luck beats 10 Osborne Bulls (Bet Now: $2.25) here. I think perhaps the ride cost him the win last time out at Randwick when getting a mile back and only going down a lip by Tribal Wisdom. Scone 1300m sitting off a fast tempo just looks the perfect recipe and he could easily blow these away.
Enormous respect to 11 Firsthand (Bet Now: $7.00). Had no hope given the tempo of the race first up in the Hall Mark at Randwick but his late splits were outstanding behind Burning Passion. He’s on target for Brisbane, so I think whatever he does here, he will improve, but certainly has enough quality to go close.
7 Grande Rosso (Bet Now: $11.00) is the interesting runner. Former Hayes/Dabernig runner making his debut for the Snowden camp. Very capable horse on his day and his two trials leading in have been very good to the eye. Normally needs a run under the belt but first up here in a Stakes race tells me there is intent to run well.
Race 7. (16:00) Dark Jewel Classic 1400m
Looks the perfect race for 1 Ghisoni (Bet Now: $4.25) to bounce back into the winners list. Thought she was excellent fresh in the Sapphire behind Quilista before going to the Godolphin Crown where she chased hard to only go down narrowly at the hands of Pecans. Third up at 1400m on the big track, she’ll do me.
3 Danish Twist (Bet Now: $13.00) is the big watch for me. She’s a high quality mare for Kris Lees who was close up in a Coolmore before being freshened up and racing in the Sapphire where she did too much work behind Quilista. Dodged the Godolphin Crown to be set for this and bear in mind she was dominant in winning this back in 2016.
6 Nurse Kitchen (Bet Now: $19.00) is the most interesting runner on the program. Former very good 3YO filly for David Briedoake that is now owned by China Horse Club and is now with Kris Lees. Hasn’t raced since the Oaks of last year when down the track behind Bonneval, but I haven’t minded her two trials leading in, and the class/quality is there. Market will tell you how she’s going.
Race 8. (16:40) Ortensia Stakes 1100m
1 Terravista (Bet Now: $4.85) just wins this doesn’t he? I know he hasn’t won in a long time, but he’s just better than these if he’s right. Ben freshened up for the Brisbane Carnival and looked the part in a recent Warwick Farm trial. Tricky gate, and 61kg, but surely class gets him home here. That’s the way I’m thinking.
3 Glenall (Bet Now: $3.65) had teased for a while but he got the win on the board last time out in the Hawkesbury Gold Rush under a lovely ride from Avdulla. Blinkers did the trick with this horse. It got him to relax and switch off, harnessing his speed. I think now he has got the win on the board, he could potentially go on with it.
7 Well Sprung (Bet Now: $18.00) is a big watch for mine. Former handy Victorian sprinter making his debut for Kris Lees. This horse had shown glimpses of being a Grpup l horse in a couple of runs but more often than not ran poorly. Now with Lees and his two trials leading in have been very good. Definite market/yard watch.
