A bumper ten race program has been set down for Randwick on Saturday, where all eyes will be on the return of Anamoe in the Apollo Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:20) Coolmore Pierro Plate 1100m
With dual acceptors, the tips may change. It’s hard to get away from 2 Don Corleone (Bet Now: $SP.00) for Team Snowden. Market kept him quite safe in betting when debuting here three weeks ago and despite sitting wide throughout, he was trucking under J Mac and let down with purpose to win impressively and stamp himself as a Slipper contender. You’d think there is natural improvement and if so, it could be a case of good luck beating him.
12 Empress Of Wonder (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a tick over three weeks between runs for Annabel Neasham since contesting the Magic Millions where I thought Schofield gave her an absolute peach from the wide gate but she just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Skirt The Law. To me, 1100m is her sweet spot so like she comes back to that here and I think she certainly has the talent to measure up.
10 Remedies (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a James Cummings trained filly that resumes. She had a two run prep in the Spring to start her career, winning impressively on debut at Cranbourne before going to the Merson Cooper at Caulfield where she was backed with confidence late but had her chance and couldn’t quite finish it off behind Little Brose. Thought it was an interesting trial at Rosehill where she lobbed 1/1 but wasn’t asked for an effort and ran seventh, but charged through the line. Keen to see how she goes fresh.
Race 2. (12:55) Tab Highway (C3) 1800m
14 Amarantz (Bet Now: $SP.00) is unknown at 1800m but she is racing like she will appreciate the rise to it. Ran over 1500m a fortnight back at Rosehill where she was wide throughout and at the top of the straight, she looked a bit one paced, but the last 150m, she picked up and was really good to the line and through it. Off that, I think 1800m is fine, and stable is flying in these Highway races.
8 Byakko (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a progressive animal for Donna Grisedale that I am confident can measure up. He resumed over 1700m at Grafton, which was a sign of some level of intent, and he was outstanding, launching late from near last to win narrowly but impressively. Has run well at 2200m previously so 1800m here should be fine and confident he will be one of the strongest late.
Fitter and up to 1800m are two big ticks for 2 Lord Desanimaux (Bet Now: $SP.00). He was over a month between runs and 2200m back to 1500m when racing at Rosehill two weeks ago and I thought he did more than enough in defeat given the set up behind Eastern Glow, beaten four lengths. I do think getting to 1800m and fitter is a big tick, and IMO he’s much better suited at Randwick than Rosehill.
Race 3. (13:30) Midway (Bm72) 1000m
7 Hard To Say (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a quality three year old for Jason Deamer that has found winning form and he gets J Mac for this. Big win at the Sunny Coast two weeks ago, giving them a start and a beating from last, showing electric change up speed to give them an absolute spanking. Should be able to be get three wide cover from the gate and be hard to hold out.
16 Another Cognac (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a colt with good ability for Bryce Heys. Lovely ride from Nash saw him at the Warwick Farm midweeks two back before racing here when back off a good speed and finished off strongly late in the piece when third to Lucky Variety. Right down in the weights and once again in a fast run 1000m, expect him to sit back and launch late.
1 Depth That Varies (Bet Now: $SP.00) won’t know himself in a race like this. His recent racing has come in solid Saturday races, the latest at Rosehill when far from disgraced in defeat behind Mariamia. Back to Midway and back to 1000m from a soft gate, he does look a big price and can certainly take this out provided there is petrol left in the tank.
Race 4. (14:05) $1M Inglis Pink Bonus (Bm88) 1600m
4 Bold Mac (Bet Now: $SP.00) has found that winning feeling…can he go on with it? Just failed to run the mile out two back here so they sent him back to 1500m a week later at Rosehill where he appreciated a fast tempo and under J Mac, he really lifted hard late to nab them for the win. He can certainly go on with it now and I do think with that run under the belt, 1600m should be okay.
9 King Ratel (Bet Now: $SP.00) is down in the weights, hard fit and in form, so he appeals as a key threat. He ran over 2000m at Rosehill four weeks ago where he got a mile out of his ground back near last in the run but he found the line with real purpose late in the piece when a narrow second to Irish Legend, who backed up and won a week later. Hard fit at the mile, he appeals.
2 Athabascan (Bet Now: $SP.00) is my early tip for the Sydney Cup so I am keen to see how he resumes for John O’Shea. Former French stayer that made his Australian debut in the Spring in the Rosehill Gold Cup and I loved the way he found the line late behind Star Of India. Closed off well in a recent trial and while he’s clearly better suited over further, he has class and that will carry him a long way.
Race 5. (14:40) Southern Cross Stakes 1200m
10 Espiona (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been a money muncher for punters but purely from a weights perspective, she is just so well in. Chris Waller trained mare that resumes and really, she has been disappointing since her 3YO season, but she has been given a good break and thought she trucked in a recent Rosehill trial, seemingly with plenty to offer. Her best version sees her win this comfortably. Market will be fascinating.
5 Quantico (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a horse I have plenty of time for. The weather and track will be crucial to his chances because he is dry track only. Smoked the pipe in a couple of trials and was trucking in front in an exhibition gallop, so I think he has returned enormous and ideally, I think he would be a Newmarket horse, where he failed last year, but this time around he looks like he will have a better grounding.
Fitter and up to 1200m are two big ticks for 6 Stampe (Bet Now: $SP.00). He resumed over 1000m two weeks ago at the Sunny Coast, a trip clearly short of his best, but I really liked the way he found the line late in the piece when third to Simply Fly. Goes much better second up and is suited up in trip. With good upside to come, he’s a sneaky chance at a big price.
Race 6. (15:20) Inglis Millennium 1100m
10 Lazzago (Bet Now: $SP.00) was a crazy price at $11 so happy to be on at that price. Defied a significant betting drift to win on debut here back on December 17 when launching late off the moderate speed and clocked outstanding late splits to win. Trialled last week at Warwick Farm and for mine, she looked to be absolutely jogging and could have won the trial comfortably had Clark sneezed on her. This will be a fast run 1100m so want to be on something strong late and she will be that.
8 Learning To Fly (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the main threats. Annabel Neasham trained filly that was kept quite safe in betting when debuting two weeks ago in the Widden at Rosehill and was impressive in winning. She was there to be run down but found plenty under pressure to fend them off and win well. That wasn’t a brutally run 1100m whereas it will be here, so the query is will she be strong late. Can win, but I’d want a much better price.
3 Coincide (Bet Now: $SP.00) will jump on the bunny and give a sight. He resumed three weeks back here where he attempted to lead throughout and gave a solid kick and to the eye, he was pretty plain late, but I think he was just run down by a couple of quality juveniles, Don Corleone and Kundalini. If you trust that form, which I do, then this guy can run some sort of positive race.
Race 7. (16:00) Light Fingers Stakes 1200m
I am a big fan of 11 Sunshine In Paris (Bet Now: $SP.00) and confident she can measure up with brilliance and residual fitness. Wide no cover at Randwick last time but despite that, she was trucking under Zac Lloyd. Just a matter of pushing the button and once he did, away the filly went, she gapped them and established herself as a Carnival type. Loved the way he trialled last week and she is the 1200m filly whereas these are looking for 1400m+.
1 In Secret (Bet Now: $SP.00) has the runs on the board and IMO is the most brilliant filly in the race. Went within a stride of being a multiple Group l winner in the Spring, running a narrow second in the Golden Rose but made amends in spades when spanking her rivals in the Coolmore Stud. Thought she had plenty to offer behind Nature Strip in the trial last week and in terms of class, she’s the top seed and I’ll bank on that getting her home.
2 Fireburn (Bet Now: $SP.00) will be spotting these a start but she will be launching at them late. Golden Slipper winner that probably didn’t quite go on with it in the Spring, ending the prep with a plain fourth in the Flight. Thought she moved very well in a trial when second to Nature Strip. Likely goes back to near last in the run but will be strong at the end.
Race 8. (16:40) Apollo Stakes 1400m
It’s hard to get away from 1 Anamoe (Bet Now: $SP.00). He is a champion that makes his awaited return to the track after a fab Spring, highlighted of course by the Cox Plate triumph. He has looked great in a couple of trials and 1400m fresh is perfect, especially at Randwick. Should be a pretty painless watch if you are on because he has too much brilliance for this lot.
10 Icebath (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a quality mare for Brad Widdup that resumes. She was one of the better horses going around without a Group l win but that all changed last start when letting down with real purpose to win the Myer Classic under Craig Williams. She is a mare who can sprint well fresh and her trials to get ready have been quite encouraging. Likely spots them a start but will be strong at the end.
2 Mo’Unga (Bet Now: $SP.00), to me, trialled like a 2400m+ horse. But, he is such a good fresh horse and has class. Mixed bag in the Spring but despite not winning, I thought he ran very well on a number of occasions in the good races. The trial last week over 1200m was that of a horse wanting a staying trip, so he may find these sharp, but he will be strong at the end.
Race 9. (17:20) Triscay Stakes 1200m
Happy to take a punt on Kiwi mare 10 Bellatrix Black (Bet Now: $SP.00), who makes her Australian debut for Kris Lees. She did a good job in NZ around 11 months, winning a key lead up to the NZ Oaks, the Sunline Vase, before a good effort in the NZ Oaks after spotting them a big start. Her two trials to get ready have been very good to the eye and yes, 1200m is short of her best, but off the trials, she’s flying and is worth an each way speck.
2 Norwegian Bliss (Bet Now: $SP.00) isn’t really well in at the weights compared to some of these, but one thing she does have on most of these is that she is a winner. Her unbeaten run came to an end in the Kevin Heffernan on Zipping Classic Day when second to Crosshaven. Her recent trial win was very good, she is genuine, good racing style and is tough. Hard to beat despite the weight query.
11 Douceur (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Patrick Payne but she now finds himself with John Thompson. She is best suited over further so on paper, 1200m here is a kick off point, but she hasn’t looked too bad in a couple of trials. Look for her to sit back near last and launch late. Doubt she wins, but a first four threat.
Race 10. (17:55) Wild Oaks (Bm88) 1300m
8 Kanazawa (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the straight bat option in the get out. He is three weeks between runs for James Cummings, his latest run coming at this track/distance where he got a fair way back in the run and was good late when eventually getting going when second to Bluff N Bluster. Big jockey upgrade IMO with Nash taking over from Dylan Gibbons, he’ll lob into the perfect spot and be hard to beat.
6 Pizarro (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks very hard to beat back to this level. Thought he did more than enough fresh behind Titanium Power before being thrown in the deep end in the Expressway and he was far from disgraced in defeat behind Mariamia. He’s not a Stakes horse, so back to 88 grade and third up from a spell, he should be back at peak fitness and I’d say this is just about D-Day for him.
5 Much Much Better (Bet Now: $SP.00) has had a few runs for Sara Ryan and finds a race where he could pinch it from on speed. Chased from a fair way out two back and tired late behind Titanium Power. He then went to the Expressway and did a pretty good job to stick on like he did when fourth to Mariamia. He races best when leading/on speed so hard to beat if that eventuates.
