10/10/2020 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben, Queensland Cup day

Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday where it is Queensland Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

2 Moonan Me (Bet Now: $3.80) on top. Brian Smith trained three year old that was four weeks between runs when racing last Saturday at Eagle Farm when off the speed and closing off strongly, just missing out on the win when a close up third to Mass Destruction. Think that form line reads best for this, she’s got upside and extra 200m suits.

Kelly Schweida has done a really good job with 1 Magic Conqueror (Bet Now: $2.00) this time in. Thought the ride from Larry Cassidy in the Toowoomba Guineas was a peach. Got the horse to sit on speed throughout before clicking him up on the turn to build the revs and full momentum, and he was strong to the line in winning. Hard to beat here.

8 Soul Dancer (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing like she will love the rise to the mile. Desleigh Forster trained filly that has had two runs back from a spell and each time has caught the eye, which was the case especially last time out at the Gold Coast over 1400m when back and closing off hard when second to Pernell. 1600m should be fine and has upside to come.

The wide gate looks tricky on paper for 1 Le Rubis (Bet Now: $6.50) but she might just be above average off what I saw in her Eagle Farm trial win. Just a fraction slow to begin but had enough early toe to hold the lead and from that point, she was always in control and loved the way she moved in winning. If she can overcome the gate, think she’s the one to beat.

3 Shaluna (Bet Now: $3.00) looks the key threat. Daughter of Shalaa for Rob Heathcoate that went like a jet in winning her Eagle Farm trial on the same morning as Le Rubis and times wise, she ran over three lengths quicker and her last 600m was similar, so on times, she was the better performed, and does draw well, so she’ll be popular.

6 Alert And Ready (Bet Now: $5.00) is the big query here. She was backed with real confidence when debuting in the Pat O’Shea on her home track at Toowoomba but halfway through the race, she dumped rider Madeline Wishart. I think you have to trust the market support there was for her that day and respect her chances here.

Leaning the way of 6 Golden Eighty (Bet Now: $5.00) for the Guy camp. This No Nay Never colt trialled at the Gold Coast a couple of weeks ago and I thought he moved quite well, especially the last 50m, when third to Shaqueno, who came out and won the Breeders Plate last Saturday at Randwick, so the form does read well and he draws soft.

5 Bayerische (Bet Now: $8.50) is an All Too Hard colt for the Stuart Kendrick stable that is on debut. He has had one trial to get ready, which came at the Sunny Coast over 850m when green and raw, but thought he moved well enough when asked for an effort. Gets the Blinkers on for the debut, telling me there is intent, and hopefully can use the gate to advantage.

2 Sherwood Prince (Bet Now: $7.50) looks the pick of the raced pair. They both debuted in the Pat O’Shea and I liked the way this guy fought on in defeat, running a game third. Gets Brad Stewart on and did show gate speed in trials, so if he wants to be near the front, can easily be done, and he has race experience on his side.

This looks a lovely race for the Tony Gollan trained 9 Ready To Roam (Bet Now: $6.00). He ran over 1050m at Toowoomba two weeks ago and just got too far back in the run but loved the way he worked home late behind stablemate Le Palmier. Doesn’t need to sit as far back this time around and if that eventuates, he’ll take some beating.

6 Genzai The Wolf (Bet Now: $5.00) is the big query here. She was backed with real confidence when debuting in the Pat O’Shea on her home track at Toowoomba but halfway through the race, she dumped rider Madeline Wishart. 12 Oh Five Glory (Bet Now: $6.00) back to 1050m interests me. Team Hulbert trained mare who I was quite keen on when she ran over 1200m at Toowoomba two weeks ago but just got too far back in the run and was never a winning threat, but did make up ground. Back to 1050m is the query, and drawn wide, but has quality and Adin Thompson has a good record on her.

Perfect race for 2 Grey Lion (Bet Now: $8.00) to win. Was keen on him in the Colin Stephen at Rosehill two weeks back but the 2400m, at that level, just found him out late when bloused by Attorney, finishing a tiring third. 2200m looks his sweet spot and Matty Smith has a great record with these stayers when he brings them to Queensland for a hit and run mission.

1 Alward (Bet Now: $5.50) is a beauty for Chris Waller. Luke Dittman gave him a peach in the Toowoomba Cup, sitting just off the speed before building the revs on the turn and he had a good battle with Free Fly Too late, nailing him right on the line. He’s loving life in the sunshine state and 2200m should be fine against these.

I don’t think 6 Fastnet Cyclone (Bet Now: $5.00) has raced any better and seems to be flying under the care of Stuart Kendrick. He was there to be beaten three weeks ago at the Gold Coast but he powered clear late and was strong to the line in winning. This is a much harder assignment, but you have to like the way he is going about it.

There was a bit of quality about the first up win of 2 Batangas Entry (Bet Now: $3.90) last Wednesday at the Gold Coast. Despite being near double figures, he looked the winner 700m out. Just a matter of getting clear air and once he did, gee he lengthened like a nice horse to win well. Any hint of improvement from that here, he’ll take a power of beating.

3 Corvo (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Spirit Of Boom 3YO for Tony Gollan that resumes. Showed good promise in his first prep, winning one of three and placing in the other two outings. Last run came at 1400m when back off a slow speed and jut couldn’t run the required sectionals to get past those in front. Looks a nice type so keen to see how he goes.

I think 5 Better Lad (Bet Now: $5.50) can make it 2/2 this time in. Resumed over 1000m at the Sunny Coast where he led throughout and was strong to the line and through it in getting the job done, which would have been a decent confidence boost. Really good form around him from when he was a juvenile and has the early speed to lead these and prove hard to run down.

Leaning towards 10 Unguarded (Bet Now: $10.00). Thought she should have gone close to winning last Wednesday at the Gold Coast. Huxtable rode a good race on the mare, but the breaks just didn’t come at the right time and I think with clear air, she goes close to winning instead of finishing fourth. She’s going well, gets Larry Cassidy aboard and should get a lovely run from the gate.

The Michael Costa team is starting to hum and they have 11 Hearts Lifted (Bet Now: $4.00) is five weeks between runs for the Paul Nolan Jnr stable since resuming at this track/distance when on speed and trying hard, but couldn’t quite get there when third to impressive winner Parko. He is a horse who races best when produced with fresh legs and I think will be better when ridden with a sit.

Really keen here on the Desleigh Forster trained 8 Red Chase (Bet Now: $4.00). Was keen on him at odds when he resumed in the Weetwood and gee I think he goes close to winning with a clear path. Just got too far back and held up at a vital stage before getting an inside split and dashing hard late to just miss. He’s carried on from last prep it would seem and can bounce back into the winners list.

1 The Odyssey (Bet Now: $4.50) has a fab record at Doomben so he can bounce back here. Impressive first up winner here, which ensured he was favourite for the Weetwood at Toowoomba and on face value, he was pretty ordinary, but the rider did say post race that the horse didn’t handle the undulating track. Back to his favourite track, he can bounce back hard and win.

6 Fiery Heights (Bet Now: $13.00) is a Barry Lockwood trained sprinter that will put himself on speed and try hard, which is what he did in the Weetwood last time out and battled away really well in defeat behind Jadentom, running a 1.6L third. Looks well placed in this kind of race, especially if he can find the front and get a cheap furlong.

Can you trust 11 Fisticuffs (Bet Now: $4.00) now he has a win on the board? Potentially, they may have figured out the key to him at Doomben a few weeks ago. Was ridden cold and due to circumstances was held up til very late, but once he got clear, he savaged the line and won with something in hand. Repeats that here and he wins again.

14 Voila (Bet Now: $16.00) has been up forever it seems but gee Chris Waller has her going super. Far from disgraced in defeat at Toowoomba two weeks ago where she closed off gamely and was strong in defeat behind impressive winner The Tax Accountant. Back to Doomben I do like for her and I think she’ll be better suited outside horses and in the clear.

8 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $31.00) isn’t one of mine but for multiples, I could certainly entertain him. He comes through the race at Toowoomba won by The Tax Accountant and was good from the back after doing work in the run early out wide. He’s hard to catch, not sure I could back him to win, but he goes in exotics for sure.

NEXT BEST: Race Five Number 2 Grey Lion

LONG SHOT: Race Seven Number 10 Unguarded
