Nine races will be run and won at Caulfield this Saturday. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out fourteen for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:40) Whisky Wine & Fire Handicap 1200m
12 Zee Hoarder (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) for me. Gelding for Cindy Alderson that debuts off the back of a Cranbourne jumpout last Tuesday where he was back behind the speed before peeling widest on the turn and though under some pressure, I loved the way he responded and won most impressively. Tricky draw, but big tick and lead for me is that Williams has been booked.
Anthony Freedman has had a great year with his juveniles and he has 4 Wilmot Pass (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) having start two here after debuting with a most impressive win at Moe on a shifty track. Not sure she beat much, but she put them away pretty quickly under Jamie Kah and was sharp to the eye. Have to respect the stable with their babies, especially when they come to town.
3 The Astrologist (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) is a Tony McEvoy trained gelding who did work on speed when resuming at Cranbourne but when asked for the big effort by Dwayne Dunn, he responded and was impressive in getting win one out of the way. Has always had a bit of a wrap on him since day one and I think this time of the year will tell us if he’s a contender or pretender re Spring Carnival candidate.
Race 2. (12:15) Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap 2000m
2000m does look the ideal set up for the Chris Waller trained 11 Tysonic (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS). She has had her last three runs over the mile, the latest at Flemington two weeks back ago when well off the speed and trying hard, making ground late behind the in form filly Fidelia. Looks as if she wants further, which she gets here, and overall, the depth here doesn’t appear strong.
8 Skyway Star (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Americain for Symon Wilde who comes back to 2000m after contesting the SA Fillies Classic over 2500m at Morphettville two weeks back where I thought she should have clearly won. Just had no luck in the straight under Mallyon when seemingly full of running and just missed out on the win when a close up third. Back in trip a little query, but has the class/quality.
7 Racing Paradise (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is intriguing. He’s won his past two for the Hayes/Dabernig team, with momentum being the big key in both wins, firstly coming at Kyneton to break the maiden tag before going to the Ballarat Synthetic where he was too good for the older horses, and that form has been franked via Fine Evader earlier this week. Hard fit/in form and a strong ten furlongs will be no issue.
Race 3. (12:50) Grunt @ Yulong Handicap 1440m
I like that 9 Ligulate (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up. Was four weeks between runs when racing at Flemington last Saturday where he didn’t really have the turn of foot to go with Fidelia but stuck to the task pretty well in defeat. Ran a ripper without luck at this track the start prior and must have pleased the stable after the race to push on again the following Saturday.
7 Asgard Massif (Bet Now: $3.50 TOP ODDS) is a John Sadler trained three year old who had good market support when resuming at Sandown and under a lovely front running ride from Willow, he proved far too good and bolted in. On face value, the depth looked suspect, but there’s been a winner already from the race and he looks to get a very soft lead here. With 51kg on his back, could be hard to beat.
11 Mr Genoa (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a Maher/Eustace trained three year old who had trialled up well prior to resuming at Hamilton over 1400m against the older horses where he looked to travel sweetly under Johnny Allen and when asked for the big effort, the response was there and gee he was impressive. You’d like to think there is room to improve off that and hopefully this former WA galloper can go on with it.
Race 4. (13:25) Long Fine Plate (78) 1600m
6 Boxachocolates (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) will love the step up to the mile. He resumed over 1400m at Flemington two weeks ago and loved the way he found the line from the back to finish just over two lengths away from Begood Toya Mother, who would be near odds on against this lot. You’d like to think there is plenty of room for improvement leading into this and is a good each way gamble IMO.
12 Silent Roar (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is yet to really run a bad race this prep for Team Hawkes. Ran over 1800m here last time out against the mares where she did work in the run to land on speed and I think the early spending of petrol tickets just told on her late when third to Remember The Name. Back to the mile should suit and if she lands near the front without doing too much work, she’ll take beating.
3 Bag Raider (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) creates some interest. Former French galloper for Scott Cameron who made his Australian debut at Bendigo over 1300m where the trip did look short of his best but loved the way he attacked the line late when clear and scored an impressive victory. Think he’ll only improve off that and I don’t mind the wide gate given the pattern when the rail is out is wide, have momentum and have last say.
Race 5. (14:05) MRC Membership Renewal Handicap 1100m
1 Jungle Edge (Bet Now: $5.00) is better than these isn’t he? Been a ripper for Mick Bell for a number of seasons and still maintains a healthy zest for racing. Hasn’t raced since May 11 here over 1200m when on speed and fighting hard when second to Order Of Command, who won last Saturday to frank the form. He’ll lead this field and with only 58.5kg on his back, he’ll take some beating.
Third up from a spell, 8 William Thomas (Bet Now: $2.80) should just about be ready. Just looked in need of the run first up behind Propelle before racing at this track/distance where he was fitter, the punters latched on and they were rewarded with an impressive win. Harder here and hasn’t really measured up against the better class sprinters, but down in the weights with upside, he gets a chance.
5 Holy Blade (Bet Now: $12.00) is an interesting runner. Former Darren Weir galloper that is having his first run for the Snowden camp and has been gelded. Trialled last week at Werribee and looked to move quite well behind Odeon, who was narrowly beaten last Saturday. This horse tends to race best when produced on the fresh side and does find a winnable race here.
Race 6. (14:45) QMS Media Handicap 1100m
3 Propelle (Bet Now: $2.60) for me, just. Spanked them two back here before lumping 60kg at this track/distance three weeks back where she surged and looked the winner but Bam’s On Fire got the inside split and got the photo verdict, just, in a thrilling finish. Not sure how much upside is left, but she’s a very sharp filly who seems to be putting it all together now. Hard to beat.
7 Bam’s On Fire (Bet Now: $5.00) has always had a bit of a boom on her since her WA days. Got the maiden win out of the way in rather arrogant fashion at Benalla before racing at this track/distance where she was kept very safe in betting and under a lovely ride from Nikita Beriman, she drove nearer the inside to hit the front and hold on to beat the hard fit/in form Propelle. Has to be respected.
9 Feared Eyes (Bet Now: $8.00) is a talented daughter of Lope De Vega resuming for the in form David Briedoake stable. This girl had two runs in the Spring to start her career, winning on debut at Ballarat before racing down the straight on Cup Day when a game second to Legend Of Condor. Really liked the way she trialled at Caanbourne a few weeks back when on speed and not asked for an effort. Happy to give her respect.
Race 7. (15:25) Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap (84) 1440m
It’s unknown as to how good 3 Begood Toya Mother (Bet Now: $1.60) can be. He’s 4/4 this prep, with his stiffest test coming two weeks ago at Flemington over 1400m and under a 12/10 steer from Declan Bates, the Daniel Bowman trained galloper passed with flying colours in winning impressively. Stepping up again here, but every time he’s been asked to rise to the occasion, he’s done it superbly.
11 Toosbuy (Bet Now: $27.00) probably isn’t a Saturday class horse but the set up here doesn’t read too bad. On the quick back up for Brett Scott after racing last Friday night at Cranbourne when on speed throughout and looked to travel well. Gave a good kick and looked home until the above average Mister Belvedere finished best out wide to nab him. Gate one, down in the weights, give in the track, likeable.
1 Romancer (Bet Now: $15.00) is an interesting runner. Former Darren Weir runner having his first outing for Grahame Begg and while his best form is over a bit further, the blinkers are off and that he has trialled well on a couple of occasions in readiness for his first day the races. He can sprint well fresh and despite a tricky gate, overall, this isn’t the strongest race going around.
Race 8. (16:05) Whisky Wine & Fire Volvo Brighton Cars Handicap (90) 1200m
Keen on 2 Smart Coupe (Bet Now: $7.00). I think the Ellerton/Zahra stable has her flying. Had been trialling up really well prior to resuming down the Flemington straight two weeks ago where she was near the inside of the pack and chased hard, but I reckon condition just gave out late when third to Moonlover. Back on a bending track and with the run under the belt, quite keen on her chances.
8 Petrelle (Bet Now: $4.00) is a mare that intrigues. Been hot on her as a decent horse since day one and at times, she has shown that, but when tested at Stakes level, she hasn’t really measured up, though in the Spring, could make a case she should have won the Durrbridge. Been freshened up after failing in the McKay behind Goodwood winner Despatch and as always, trialled up sharp, this time coming last week at Avoca. 1200m is a massive query but does have the speed to overcome the barrier. Last bit will be the test.
7 Queen Annabel (Bet Now: $17.00) is a talented mare for the Rebecca Kelly stable who was kept quite safe in betting when resuming at Caulfield three weeks ago and I thought she was okay in defeat behind All About Nicci in what was a funnily run affair. Yet to do anything in three second up runs but I think there’s been excuses each time, so giving her a chance here.
Race 9. (16:40) Catanach's Jewellers Handicap 2000m
Perfect assignment for 9 Live And Free (Bet Now: $2.60). Was keen on him running well in the Lord Mayors Cup two weeks ago over 2000m and he did run very well from the back, but had to settle for a narrow fourth to Grey Lion in a great finish, with five runners separated by under a length. John O’Shea did say leading up to that race that he was perhaps just half a run short, so 2000m here at this level, he looks extremely hard to beat.
6 Second Bullet (Bet Now: $8.00) looks to be going nicely for Danny O’Brien. He ran over 2000m at Flemington a fortnight ago where he got back in the run and while it took a little while to wind up, had to like the way he finished off his race to run a fourth to Mantastic, beaten just under a length. That was his first run since Anzac Day so should be room to improve and likes Caulfield.
2 Home By Midnight (Bet Now: $10.00) is the horse I’m wary of. Former kiwi who has had two runs in Australia for Patrick Payne, the latest behind Mantastic at Flemington a fortnight back. Not sure the rail was the A1 ground for the meeting but he stuck to the task pretty well after getting back in the run. I think 2400m+ is when he’ll be really effective, but stable is flying at the moment. Big tick also that blinkers are back on.
