A dramatic turn of events unfolded at Lingfield on Tuesday when 28/1 betting outsider Certain Style stormed to an uncontested win. Ridden by apprentice jockey Tyrese Cameron and trained by Laura Mongan, the filly surged into an early lead, eventually crossing the line a staggering 22 lengths ahead.
The race’s unusual outcome didn’t go unnoticed by the stewards, who handed 10-day bans to four jockeys for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures during the race. Kyle McHugh (Gold Aura), Mason Paetel (Upepo), Warren Fentiman (Shaad), and Chloe Lyons (Grand Duchess Olga) were all penalized for misjudging the pace and making late efforts that left them unable to challenge the runaway leader.
Certain Style’s bold tactics saw her pull 30 lengths clear by the halfway point, with none of her competitors reacting in time to close the gap. The result left racegoers stunned and sparked an inquiry by the stewards.
Fergus Sweeney, a former jockey and part of the stewarding team, explained the decision to Sky Sports Racing:
“We found the four jockeys guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures, so they all received 10-day bans. In layman’s terms, they misjudged the race, and we applied the entry point for inexperienced riders.”
For Cameron and Certain Style, it was a career-defining performance, while the controversial race has left plenty for the Lingfield stewards and racing community to reflect upon.
