Champion mare Almond Eye will go out a winner after taking out Sunday’s Japan Cup at Tokyo racecourse.
The Champion Japanese mare was having her fifteenth and final run in todays Japan Cup where she was the equal favourite with unbeaten Contrail but the more experienced mare with the aid of a perfect ride from jockey Christophe Lemaire was simply too good for her rivals.
Almond Eye was brought to the middle of the track by Lemaire early in the straight giving the mare plenty of time to run down the runaway leader Kiseki and she was good enough to hold off the challenges of Contrail in second and Daring Tact in third.
