New Zealand racehorse trainer Steve Anderton remains critically injured in hospital after an accident at his stables.
Anderton, one of the most prominent trainers at Wingatui, near Dunedin, was found by colleagues trapped under a horse truck ramp early on Monday.
He was unloading horses when he was apparently struck in the head by the float door after a hydraulic failure.
Anderton remained in Dunedin Hospital’s intensive care unit on Tuesday morning in a critical condition.
Anderton’s family is from one of the most prominent thoroughbred racing families in Dunedin. Three generations of the family have been leaders in training and breeding in the region.
Among his best horses has been The Jewel, who he trained with his father Hec to win the 1000 Guineas in 2003, the Waikato International in 2005 and the 2003 Doomben Roses.
His current charges include The Diamond One, winner of the Group Three White Robe Lodge Handicap at Wingatui last year.
