Leading international jockey Christophe Soumillon has been suspended for eight days following a stewards’ inquiry into his ride aboard Puerto Rico in Tuesday’s Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Stewards found Soumillon rode the 16-1 outsider in a manner that advantaged stablemate Gstaad, the Aidan O’Brien-trained second favourite ridden by Ryan Moore.
The inquiry focused on an incident in the home straight where Soumillon shifted Puerto Rico away from the rail after straightening.
Officials determined the manoeuvre impeded Power Blue while simultaneously creating a clear passage for Gstaad along the inside.
Stewards ruled the move was deliberate and provided a competitive advantage during the crucial closing stages of the Group 1 contest.
Puerto Rico ultimately finished last, while Gstaad charged through to finish a narrow second.
The incident was the second disciplinary matter to emerge from the race involving the powerful Ballydoyle operation.
Earlier, Ryan Moore was handed a three-day suspension for careless riding following interference shortly after the start.
The race itself was won by the unbeaten Bow Echo, who edged out Gstaad by a short head in a thrilling photo finish.
Ridden by Billy Loughnane for trainer George Boughey, Bow Echo maintained his perfect record and secured a breakthrough Group 1 victory.
Soumillon’s suspension adds another layer of controversy to one of the feature races of the Royal Ascot carnival and is likely to remain a major talking point throughout the week.
