Bodemeister, runner-up in this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has been retired to stud following an injury to his left shoulder.
Owners WinStar Farm said the colt was expected to fully recover, although not soon enough for the Breeders’ Cup.
A statement from WinStar said trainer Bob Baffert believed the injury happened in a recent track gallop at Del Mar.
Baffert said the horse stumbled significantly and threw his exercise rider to the ground.
The attrition rate from this year’s Triple Crown series has been high with I’ll Have Another, winner of the Derby and the Preakness retired to stud in Japan.
I’ll Have Another was withdrawn from the Belmont Stakes on the eve of the race with subsequent winner Union Rags also since retired with injury.
