Race 1. (22:50) Goodwood Handicap 4112m
17 Tronador (Bet Now: $SP.00) is worth an each way ticket in the opening race. 4000m, wet ground, testing ground, I want to be on a proper stayer and this Irish jumper fits the bill. He ran over 3400m at Bellewstown last time and closed off strongly late in the piece from off the speed when third. He won’t know himself with 51.5kg on his back and he does save his best for wet tracks. He’ll do me.
1 Calling The Wind (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the class of the field and that will carry him a long way. He is over a month between runs since proving too strong in the time honoured Northumberland Plate at Newcastle when finishing best over the two miles. He is a winner at the track and has won at the trip. The query is wet ground but with class on his side, he commands respect.
4 Typewriter (Bet Now: $SP.00) has been kept on ice for Andrew Balding, having not raced since the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot when far from disgraced in defeat behind Dawn Rising, beaten just over three lengths. That was his first real look at this sort of trip and passed with flying colours, so with that run under the belt, he is certainly in with a shout.
Race 2. (23:25) Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes 1609m
For me, the price gap between 2 Docklands (Bet Now: $SP.00) and Nostrum is far too great so I am leaning the way of the former. He is potentially heading to Australia for the Golden Eagle and a win here against a potential top class horse in Nostrum would all but secure his plane ticket. He has been kept on ice since an impressive win at Royal Ascot in the Britannia when on speed throughout but moved very well and when clicked up, he was strong to the line and comfortably held his rivals. Good test here, but confident he measures up.
7 Nostrum (Bet Now: $SP.00) wouldn’t have looked out of place in the Sussex so with that in mind, he has to rate very highly here. He looked a moral when resuming in a Listed race at Newmarket and justified the expectation with a comfortable win by three lengths. He is destined for Group l company and this could well be a stepping stone towards that level.
4 Galeron (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a sleeper at a big price. He was far from disgraced in both the 2000 Guineas and Irish 2000 Guineas but was quite plain in the St James’s Palace behind Paddington, and we know what that horse has done since. The form around him is A1 and is a winner on wet ground. Sleeper at a likely decent price.
Race 3. (00:00) Golden Mile 1609m
6 Johan (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an excellent fresh horse and fresh here signals some form of intent. He resumes, having not raced since October 15 at Ascot when producing an end of prep run, finishing down the track behind Shelir. He does go well fresh and swims, so he’ll get conditions to suit and is drawn out so he has a bit going for him to run well.
13 Lattam (Bet Now: $SP.00) seems the most obvious. William Haggas trained four year old that resumed over the mile at Newcastle, his first look at Synthetic, and passed with flying colours, getting the job done nicely. That was his first run in nine weeks so with room for improvement, he rates highly against this lot.
16 Darkness (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver at odds and is in with a shout. First run for the O’Meara camp came over the mile at Newmarket a few weeks back when showing good fight to fend them off and win. The race was there to be won and he dug in nicely to score. He has run well at Goodwood previously and loves heavy ground so he has a bit in his corner to measure up.
Race 4. (00:35) King George Qatar Stakes 1006m
6 Highfield Princess (Bet Now: $SP.00) is short enough but it’s hard to get away from her. Top class sprinting mare that was brave as ever during Royal Ascot, placing in both the King’s Stand and Platinum Jubilee. She has run well at Goodwood previously and thrives when getting her toe in, plus the depth here is nowhere near as strong as what she raced against at Ascot. She should be winning.
1 Equality (Bet Now: $SP.00) faces a stiff test against these but he has earned a crack at this level the way he’s racing. Arrogant win two back at Windsor before going to Sandown just under a month ago when an impressive winner at Sandown in a solid Group lll. I doubt he is good enough to beat Highfield Princess but I reckon he’s a near lock to run top three.
7 Kerdos (Bet Now: $SP.00) has the engine under the hood to run a cheeky race. If he ran straight, he would have won at Royal Ascot two back but wandered under pressure and threw the race away. He then went to York where things didn’t go to place for him so forgive and forget the run. Similar to Equality, doubt he wins, but can certainly run top four.
Race 5. (01:10) Glorious Stakes 2412m
1 Hamish… (Bet Now: $SP.00) could he be a potential Melbourne Cup candidate? He is seven years of age but is lightly raced and is putting together an impressive record. He resumed over 2800m at York and despite probably running out of condition late, class came to the fore and he was too good. He’ll be strong at the end of 2400m, he swims, good upside to come…think he’s a good thing.
2 Candleford (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the key and I dare say only threat. He resumed at this track/distance in a field of four and only beat one home in a fair return behind Peripatetic. The lead is that Marquand prefers Hamish over this guy but this horse is another that won’t mind give in the track and he does have runs on the board not to dismiss him.
3 Epic Poet (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one that can fill a minor spot. Former French galloper that made his UK debut at Newbury on July 22 and was pretty plain I thought behind Al Aasy but I will say the horse did have more depth than what he faces here. Not sure he’s good enough to win but can certainly pinch a first four spot at a price.
Race 6. (01:45) It Pays To Buy Irish Nursery 1207m
5 Serried Ranks (Bet Now: $SP.00) has wet track form and that is enough for me to lean his way in a very open race. He had two runs to start his career in May, winning on debut at Nottingham on heavy ground, winning a field of three before a down the track effort at Salisbury. With that heavy track win next to his name, I reckon that will hold him in good stead for this.
It’s hard to knock how 1 Starlust (Bet Now: $SP.00) has gone about it in his three start career to date. Did more than enough on debut at Lingfield before putting together a couple of wins on the bounce, the latest at Newbury when leading throughout and was strong to the line in winning. Good test here, and unknown on wet ground, but with his racing style, he’ll give himself every chance.
9 Swordplay (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver. Opening two career outings came at Hamilton when winning the second start in a sharp display. He then went to Yarmouth where he wasn’t as dynamic, running third, beaten just under three lengths. Unknown on wet ground, but seems to have a decent racing style and is a knockout chance at a likely decent price.
Race 7. (02:20) Coral Handicap 2253m
2 Balance Play (Bet Now: $SP.00) will take beating if he gets front end control. He got that at Chester last time and once he found control, it was race over and impressive to the line in winning. That was on testing ground so he’ll get similar conditions and I think the extra 200m will be no issue for him. Hopefully doesn’t get annoyed in front.
4 Nader King (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Sir Michael Stoute trained son of Camelot that is heading in the right direction. Strong winner at Nottingham three back and has placed at his last two subsequent runs, the latest at Salisbury when second over 2400m. Back to 2200m looks ideal and his best efforts have come when getting his toe in, plus Ryan Moore takes over so he has a bit going for him.
11 True Legend (Bet Now: $SP.00) is unknown on wet ground but he comes here off a pretty sharp win. That came over 2400m at Salisbury when a pretty dominant winner after getting a beaut run in transit. I will say the overall time was very slow so that is the knock, and unknown as to how he’ll handle wet ground but off a win, not penning him.
