A bumper card of racing has been assembled for Sha Tin on Sunday with one of their premier races, the Hong Kong Derby (2000m), the feature across the ten races.
Race 1. (16:00) Fay Fay Handicap (Class 4) 1200m
Going with 7 All Best Friends (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). Had done nothing in 12 outings on the turf at Sha Tin but that all changed at this track/distance last time out where he gave them a proper pasting under Purton, really letting down the final 100m to win well. Interesting that Zac doesn’t remain on and instead rides a first starter, but just can’t ignore the manner in which this guy spanked them and this isn’t a strong Class 4.
4 Evan Almighty (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a Douglas Whyte trained gelding that was kept pretty safe in betting when debuting at this track/distance under Moreira and after getting the box seat sit, I thought he had his chance to win, but just whacked away for fourth. Has since had a trial at Happy Valley when on speed and given a good hitout. Tricky gate, but is a leading chance IMO.
Not sure what to make of 5 Sky Show (Bet Now:ย $SP.00), a first starter that Zac Purton rides over All Best Friends if that is a lead. Has learned his craft via several trials at Conghua. Latest trial he sat on what was a very moderate tempo before taking the front in the straight under riding and winning well, but the time was very slow. Put that down to the very slow early sectionals. Have to respect the jock choosing this bloke.
Race 2. (16:30) Helene Mascot Handicap (Class 4) 1600m
11 Party Everyday (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) for me. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago where Zac rode him stone cold from the wide gate and it seemed to really work with this guy. Got held up badly when building the revs before eventually getting clear and loved the way he attacked the line late when out. If he reproduces that, think he wins.
10 Menaggio (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks the key threat. He ran third in the race mentioned above and I thought it was a lovely ride from Poon. He gave the gelding every chance and was there to win. Just couldn’t quite finish it off but was still game in defeat. I think he’ll be ridden cold from the wide gate and be saved for the final 250-300m.
Really like the jockey upgrade for 3 Jimmu (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) with Blake Shinn replacing Dylan Mo. Comes through the same race as the one above where he was in the box seat and seemingly in the right spot, but it came to getting clear, it just didn’t happen when Mo was looking to get clear. Ugly watch in the straight. Drawn out, Shinn aboad, can see him running a much better race.
Race 3. (17:00) Super Satin Handicap (Class 4) 1200m
10 Yee Cheong Pegasus (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks the pony to bet on. Tony Millard trains this five year old, who broke through for his maiden win over this track/distance back on Feb 23 and it was impressive, doing work without cover before taking the front and really dashing clear late to win well. Has been kept up to the mark with a trial and loved the way he moved there. Gets run of the race from the gate, happy to be in his corner.
1 Chairman Lo (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a son of Sidereus for John Size that resumes. This bloke had a busy first prep to start his career, and while he didn’t win, he did place on six occasions from 12 outings. Loved the way he went in a recent trial here. The query is that Joao Moreira, who has ridden in all trials leading into this run, is riding Galactic.
11 Beauty Angel (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is one who could provide some value to multiples. Went too hard in front last time over the Happy Valley mile before coming back to 1200m here and liked the way he worked home, ridden cold. Has gate one here, and I think he can take up a spot either leaders back or three back and be a chance to sneak into multiples.
Race 4. (17:30) Ping Hai Star Handicap (Class 4) 1400m
14 Courageous Dragon (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is the pony to bet on I think. Son of Pins who ran over this track/distance four weeks ago when wide with cover and kept coming in a pretty good effort to run third. Tick over trial last week was good. Just where he gets to from the gate is unknown but if he can get luck in running, he’ll take some beating.
5 Hinyuen Swiftness (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) ran second in the race mentioned above and I thought his effort in defeat was enormous given he did plenty of work early to find the front. Was entitled to drop away but kept finding and was only really bloused late. If he can get to the front without spending too many petrol tickets, he’ll be hard to run down.
Think up to 1400m will suit 4 Tailor Made (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). On the quick back up after racing over 1200m here last Saturday where not much went his way in the straight and should have finished a touch closer after getting little room to move at a vital stage. Like that Blake Shinn remains on and big tick is that he gets to 1400m.
Race 5. (18:00) Designs On Rome Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
Safe option looks to be 12 Ping Hai Bravo (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago when back off what wasn’t an overly quick tempo but liked the way he finished his race off to finish a close up fourth. Moreira is on from a soft gate and should get run of the race stuff. He looks the one in form and heading in the right direction.
9 Happy Alumni (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is three weeks between runs. Raced at this track/distance in what was a real on pace dominated affair but he was a clear eye catcher, working home with real purpose to run fourth. If he can sit that pair or two closer in the run, he’ll take some holding out at the end and prove a leading threat to Ping Hai Bravo.
6 Baltic Success (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a Danny Shum trained gelding that ran second to the race that Happy Alumni ran fourth in. Blake Shinn gave him an absolute peach of a ride in front and did everything bar win. Just had no petrol tickets for the final 75m, getting bloused on the line. Has to be a chance with his racing pattern.
Race 6. (18:35) Akeed Mofeed Handicap (Class 3) 2000m
On top is 1 High Rev (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). He ran over 1800m here two weeks ago when third to Helene Leadingstar but I think if he ran straight and did everything right, he likely wins the race instead of running third. That was the first time that Van Niekirk steered the horse on race day so he’ll know the horse better and hopefully does everything right.
2 Enrichment (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks the key threat. He ran second in the Helene Leadingstar race mentioned above and his effort was quite good. Came off the bit early but was strong late when clear and was only bloused the final 50-75m. Gets a good run from the gate and was coming back from 2000m last time so back up to 2000m is ideal.
13 London Hall (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) rises to Class 3 but David Hall has him going well. Four weeks between runs since bolting up at this track/distance at Class 4 level, getting a lovely run via a peach Moreira steer and he was far too good. Tumbles in weight with the class rise and if he can hold up from gate one, he’ll be dangerous.
Race 7. (19:05) Luger Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
Just needs luck from the tricky gate and 5 Wellington (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is the winner IMO. Has had two starts for two impressive wins. Gave them a spanking on debut before sitting off the speed next start and loved the way he knuckled down to get the job done. Tick over trial was outstanding to the eye and he looks destined to reach a higher level.
11 Eternal Harvest (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks the only other winning chance. Progressive son of Smart Missile who is three weeks between runs since giving them a spanking at this track/distance, putting them away like a good horse. Beluga has come out to frank that form and the big tick for him is that he does have the gate to take up a good spot.
The best version of 12 Monkey Jewellery (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is capable of running a positive race. Ran over this track/distance three weeks ago when doing a bit of work from the wide gate and couldn’t figure in the finish behind E Star. Gets Teetan to steer and has a much better gate this time around. Should run a much better race this time around.
Race 8. (19:35) Hong Kong Derby 2000m
Time for 3 More Than This (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) to shine on the big stage. Has been excellent in the first two legs of the 4YO Series, the latest being the Classic Cup when back from the wide gate and closing off hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Golden Sixty. Big, big tick is that he gets gate one and can sit much closer. Think he wins and wins well.
1 Golden Sixty (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a deserving favourite. He’s won the first two legs of the 4YO Series with the Classic Cup win being outstanding given there was injury concerns leading in, he had missed work, but he was just too good. Can he stretch his brilliance to 2000m? From the gate, with a key rival mapping much better…he’s the main threat, but couldn’t dive in.
7 Columbus County (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is the x factor I feel. He’s got the talent to win this, but his racing manners aren’t 100%. It cost him the win at this track/distance last start in a Class 2 when looking home when hitting the front late but half turned it up and was grabbed near the peg. Tick over trial was good, he has the 2000m run under the belt…he’s the value runner.
Race 9. (20:15) Collection Handicap (Class 3) 1400m
Bit of guessing but going to take a punt with 1 General’s Delight (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). This guy formerly raced under the name of Millard Reaction, who was a very promising three year old trained by Team Edmonds before being sent to Honkers. Has had had one run here, which came back on November 3 when well and truly down the track but was found to have had an irregular heart rhythm post race. Been given a good break, three trials in have been solid and Moreira is on.
6 Take What You Need (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a little while between wins but he’s knocking on the door for John Moore. Ran over this track/distance four weeks ago when given a lovely steer by Bowman and tried hard to get there but had to settle for second to Seattle Choice. Already a couple of winners have come from that event and draws well.
Think a rise to 1400m will really suit 2 All In Mind (Bet Now:ย $SP.00), who has raced over 1200m here at his past two, the latest coming two weeks ago when finishing off with real purpose to run third to Lucky More, who is progressive and promising, so that form reads okay for this and should get a good run in transit from the gate.
Race 10. (20:50) Rapper Dragon Handicap (Class 2) 1400m
With 12 Circuit Three (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) in the get out. This Tony Cruz five year old is heading in the right direction, winning three on the bounce, the latest coming three weeks ago at this track/distance in a Class 3 where he had to lump 59kg and overcome traffic difficulties to get the job done. Tumbles in weight and should get a lovely run from the gate.
4 Happy Fun (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win one. Four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when put on speed by Moreira and tried hard to get the win but couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Dragon General, beaten a nose. Tick over trial was good and from the gate Purton has plenty of options.
The interesting runner is 5 Thinkin Big (Bet Now:ย $SP.00), a horse who was purchased from Australia with eyes towards the Hong Kong Derby but after a terrible first up effort over the mile here back in June, he was sent for a good long spell. Just one trial leading in for this resumption, over an unsuitable trip, but Douglas Whyte does have a knack of getting them to fire first up.
