Ten races will be run and won at Sha Tin on Sunday, with good depth across the program, highlighted by an early Hong Kong Derby lead up.

Race 1. (16:00) Wu Kai Sha Handicap (Class 5) 1200m
1 Sky Prophet (Bet Now: $6.00) is the way I am leaning in an open race to start the meeting. He hasn’t raced since Nov 24 over this track/distance in a Class 4 where he got a fair way out of his ground but did make up headway and was pretty good in defeat I thought. Tick over trial was good, gets in very well after the claim and has a gate to use to settle closer in the run.
2 Smart Leader (Bet Now: $17.00) is a key threat. He ran over this trip at Happy Valley last time, making up ground from off the speed to be beaten 4.3L by Beauty Light, who ran well on Wednesday night, so the form reads well enough and he does save his best for this track/distance.
8 Falcon Court (Bet Now: $9.50) is four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance. He did early work from the wide gate but made up good headway when a close up fifth. If he can settle closer, do less work, he’s racing well enough to be dangerous here.
Race 2. (16:30) Wu Kau Tang Handicap (Class 4) 1200m
2 Groovy Feeling (Bet Now: $5.00) for me. Jamie Richards trained gelding that debuted over this track/distance on Dec 22 when getting into a decent spot just off the speed from the gate and he loomed large to win but just couldn’t quite see it through when third. Better for the run, and despite a tricky gate, I say he rates highly against these.
3 Inno Century (Bet Now: $7.50) is a son of Darci Brahma that is on debut. This guy has had extensive trial to get ready for start one, the latest seeing him run eighth over 1200m here but I thought he didn’t move too bad in defeat. Tricky gate but the good lead is that Zac Purton is riding, so watch the market.
4 Joyful Treasure (Bet Now: $20.00) should be better for the debut run, which came here on New Years Day when near the speed throughout and tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when beaten under six lengths by The Boom Box. Maps ideally from the gate and the depth isn’t overly deep.
Race 3. (17:00) Chek Keng Handicap (Class 4) 1200m
3 Dragon Air Force (Bet Now: $2.80) has got a win on the board and he can go on with it. That win came at this track/distance four weeks ago where he got into a beaut spot just off the speed and once presented clear air, he knuckled down with purpose late to win and win well. Room for improvement, he takes beating.
4 Fun N Fun Together (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of Charm Spirit that resumes for Frankie Lor. This guy is first up, having not raced since October 6 over this track/distance when attempting to lead throughout and giving a strong kick but just couldn’t quite see it through when second to Lucky Eight. Trial work to get ready has been strong and has a good racing style.
6 Nebraskan (Bet Now: $7.50) is three weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance where he was quite plain in defeat I thought. He did do early work from the wide gate but I expected much more from him, finishing down the track. Tick over trial was good so don’t dismiss him.
Race 4. (17:30) Wu Kau Tang Handicap (Class 4) 1200m
1 Sunny Da Best (Bet Now: $2.80) looks ready to win. Latest run saw him finish second over this track/distance four weeks ago, getting the right run in transit and loomed to put the race away but just found one better. He’s found positive form, Zac sticks, he’s the one to beat.
2 Riding High (Bet Now: $21.00) comes here off the back of a track/distance placing on New Years Day where he had his chance but he stayed on and was quite good in defeat I thought. Slight query at the end of 1200m, but with the soft trip, he should be fine.
4 Fantastic Honour (Bet Now: $51.00) is a son of Headwater on debut for Douglas Whyte. He has been trialling since October, so the grounding is well and truly there for start one, the latest trial seeing him run third here, so he appears well educated and has a good gate to use.
Race 5. (18:00) Hung Hom Bay Handicap (Class 4) 1400m
5 Juneau Pride (Bet Now: $4.20) is bursting to win and I think he finds his race. Four weeks between runs since racing at this track/distance when on speed throughout and I thought was there to put the race to bed but just found one better in Ka Ying Attack. Maps perfect from the gate and that 1400m run under the belt should hold him in good stead.
2 City Thunder (Bet Now: $5.00) is racing like he will appreciate 1400m. He ran over 1200m here four weeks ago when off speed but kept chasing and finding the line in defeat when second to Super Legends. Zac rode last time, he sticks and up in trip, rates highly.
8 Quick Quick Win (Bet Now: $101.00) is one at odds I could entertain. He debuted at this track/distance when doing early work to land on speed and that early burn just told on him late in the piece. Better for that run under the belt, he had trialled well prior so don’t dismiss him.
Race 6. (18:35) Hung Mui Kuk Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
9 Mojave Desert (Bet Now: $6.50) showed good promise as a potential miler when with Chris Waller before coming to Hong Kong under Mark Newnham. They tried him as a miler but last start, he was freshened up for 1200m and he reacted to it, winning impressively from off the speed to score. His confidence is up, he can go on with it.
12 Offroad Master (Bet Now: $4.00) has done little wrong in a three start career and rates highly. He hasn’t raced since Dec 29 over this track/distance when on speed and fought hard but just found one better in Jolly Companion. Rises in Class but gets an ideal map and a good racing style.
2 Victory Moments (Bet Now: $12.00) has the soft gate to be dangerous at odds. He ran over this track/distance on Dec 18 when near the speed throughout and was there to win but just couldn’t quite finish the job. Not sure I could back him to win but a must for exotics.
Race 7. (19:05) The Racing Club Cup (Class 2) 1400m
Keen to be with 4 Young Champion (Bet Now: $3.30). He ran over this track/distance on International Day where he got a mile out of his ground but loved the way he closed his race off in defeat behing Packing Hermod. Gets a significant weight pull on that horse here, Purton takes over and has a more kind map. Best on the program.
1 Packing Hermod (Bet Now: $5.50) has done little wrong in a five start career and rates highly. His last start was the race mentioned above when giving them a start and a beating under Joao Moreira. IMO, it’s a jockey downgrade via Hewitson taking over and has a wide gate to contend with. But, he’s a winner and a line finder.
8 Sunlight Power (Bet Now: $4.60) is a model of consistency and is a sleeper. He comes here with fresh legs and back to 1400m after racing over the mile on Nov 24 where he got off speed but worked home with purpose behind Patch Of Theta. Tick over trials since have been good, he’ll be strong late…must include in wider multiples.
Race 8. (19:35) Hebe Haven Handicap (Class 3) 1200m
6 Masterofmyuniverse (Bet Now: $1.50) is heading in the right direction and I am confident will go through the grades. He was runner up in his opening two career outings before going to this track/distance two weeks ago where he looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted in impressive fashion. Good horse heading in the right direction, he takes a power of beating here.
5 Call Me Gorgeous (Bet Now: $19.00) is a very interesting runner. He makes his Hong Kong debut after two runs in Australia, the last run being a dominant win on the Kenso at Randwick. He’s come to Hong Kong, has had three trials under the belt and is getting better with each trial to my eye, so watch the market.
8 Sugar Ball (Bet Now: $31.00) can run top four without surprising. He ran over this track/distance last time out and I thought was unlucky in defeat, getting badly held up in the straight when having something to offer and should have finished much closer behind Lady’s Choice. Tricky gate, but he has to be included in exotics.
Race 9. (20:10) Pak Shek Au Handicap 1600m
2 Fast Network (Bet Now: $9.00) can put his hand up for the 4YO Series here. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1200m here where he got a fair way out of his ground but he was one of the real eye catchers of the meeting in defeat behind Raging Blizzard. Interesting the set up, 1200m to 1600m, and Blinkers off, but he just looks loaded with talent.
5 Steps Ahead (Bet Now: $9.00) has done little wrong in a seven start career and commands respect. Latest run came at this track/distance on New Years Day. He got dragged back for cover from the wide gate but charged to the line when a narrow second to Huge Wave. That was his first run in a month so with upside/improvement to come, he takes beating.
11 Sky Heart (Bet Now: $26.00) is a watch horse. He resumes for Casper Fownes, having not raced since May 19 over 1400m here when attempting to lead throughout and giving a decent enough kick but just felt the pinch late. First up in this kind of race is interesting but he has trialled well enough.
Race 10. (20:45) Pak Tin Handicap (Class 3) 1600m
7 Fallon (Bet Now: $8.50) each way for me in the get out. He’s sneaky flying for Tony Cruz, the latest run being on New Years Day at this track/distance where he got a fair way out of his ground but made up decent headway in defeat I thought behind Huge Wave. If he can use the inside gate to advantage and settle a pair or two closer, he’ll be hard to hold out.
2 Charming Legend (Bet Now: $9.00) has done little wrong in a five start career and commands respect. He attempted to lead throughout over 1400m here last time out and gave a decent kick from the front but just couldn’t quite see it through when a close up fourth. The 1600m is a query but with right run, he’ll be fine and is a leading contender.
8 Blessed Nation (Bet Now: $31.00) should appreciate a rise to the mile after racing over 1400m here three weeks back where he got a fair way back and while he was never threatening, he did make up ground and was pretty good in defeat I thought behind Johannes Brahms. Racing like 1600m suits, he’s a knockout chance.
