“Yes Cogburn, he’s a winner” stated John Muir of Milburn Creek Stud with the ‘fastest horse in the world’ to stand at Widden Stud, in the Widden Valley.
“Cogburn was so impressive when paraded at Winstar Farm,” said John Muir. “A true good looking Australian style of printer, correct with short cannons and so athletic in his movements.’’
“My manager Scott Holcombe is a very tough marker and said ‘John this is a beautiful horse,’ so there I decided to send him stakes winning mares, and at $25,000 including GST he is good value.”
With Antony Thompson of Widden Stud hosting Australians at Winstar, Kentucky it was Elliott Walden of Winstar Farm who said “that in purchasing Cogburn, Australia was a real component.”
Cogburn certainly commanded attention, with ‘a quality head, deep girt, good shoulder, short cannon, beautiful top line, good hind leg and powerful rum, good 16.1hh size’ as the comments.
“We are bringing the fastest horse in the world to Australia,” said Antony Thompson, with Cogburn running a world record 59.8sec for 1100m in the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes on turf at Saratoga.
“With his sire Not This Time being a sire sensation, he has sired three champions, six Grade 1 winners, and has an amazing ratio of 12% stakes and 69% winners to runner in just in just four crops.”
“He’ easy to mate to” said Julian Blaxland, “and with the first season sire market so competitive he’s a perfect outcross for Danehill and Dante lines, and who gets the cross first gets the goal.’
Luke Lillington from Ireland added “he is ideal for Australian bloodlines, as Giants Causeway was sensational at home, Storm Cat so influential, and Halo in the pedigree good for breeding.”
In winning 9 of his 16 starts, and rated the highest rated Sprinter on the Longines WBR Rankings for 2024, he defeated Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winners Caravel and Nobals in the Troy Stakes.
He captured the $2m Aiunsworth Turf Sprint Stakes at Churchill Downs in running 1-07.68 for the 6 furlongs and opened 2024 with the Twin Spires Turf Sprint on Kentucky Derby weekend.
In fact, with Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen having Cogburn as a world record holder he stated “I’ve had some of the fastest horses in the world, some of the fastest horses of all time.”
“And he’s still the first one I’ve ever had run five and a half furlongs – and that’s not five-eighths five, that’s five-and-a-half, so that’s basically a sixteenth of a mile faster than a fast horse.”

“And with Saratoga Treasure also being US bred, and from a deep stakes family, she’s by the Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach, with her Farnan and Wild Ruler foals selling at the Magic Millions.”
