Mark Zahra believes Middle Earth’s chances in the $5 million Caulfield Cup hinge on one key factor this Saturday: a clean break from the gates.
The Ciaron Maher-trained stayer was slow to step in the lead-up Turnbull Stakes and, despite closing off soundly, finished ninth as he builds toward his primary spring assignment.
“Yeah, we’ve got to work that out,” Zahra said about Middle Earth’s barrier manners on Tuesday.
“He just got a bit agitated, the other day.
“Whether he got a bit hot and bothered, I don’t know, but we’ll make sure we’ve got one of the good barrier boys up with him.
“It’s going to be important.
“You can’t miss it like he did, last start, and be a chance.
“Let’s hope he does.”
Despite an unplaced trio of runs this preparation, Zahra is adamant the timing is right for Middle Earth to peak when it matters.
“Ciaron’s had this race as the grand final, all the way along,” he said.
“He ran 2000 (metres) first-up, and then back to 1800, so it’s been a prep where we’ve been getting him spot on for the Caulfield Cup.
“It’s his day to do something and I think he will.
“On his best form, he is quite good.
“If we can get it together, I think we can win.”
