An Extreme Choice colt became the second $2m lot of this year's Gold Coast Yearling Sale

Yulong won last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes with a seven-figure Extreme Choice colt bought out of Magic Millions’ Gold Coast sale ring and it is hoping lightning can strike twice after landing the top lot of Day 2 at this year’s sale.

The Victorian operation on Wednesday paid $2 million for a colt by the glamour Newgate stallion out of Hinchinbrook mare Hazlebrook.

The colt is a brother Group 3-winning filly Wollombi, who Yulong bought for $500,000 at the 2024 National Yearling Sale and Yulong general manager Jun Zhang said the operation is keen to stock up on Extreme Choice progeny.

“He’s a very special colt, he was our only target that we definitely needed to buy,” Zhang said of the team’s approach to Day 2.

“We can see some stallion potential with him and also we own the sister as well, she is in-foal to Diatonic, so we try and create our own families so that is another reason why we had to get him.

“Extreme Choice is a very successful stallion and could be a history (making) stallion in the future, so this is why Mr Zhang is trying to get every Extreme Choice he can.”

Devil Night carried the Yulong colours to victory in last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes, franking its decision to pay $1.4m for him at Magic Millions two years ago.

Yulong’s big buy was the second $2m colt in as many days at this year’s Gold Coast sale, following the Frankel colt who sold to Coolmore for that amount on Day 1.

The Extreme Choice, who was offered by Kingstar Farm, was joined on Wednesday’s millionaire’s list by a couple of Snitzel colts who each sold for $1.5m.

Coolmore’s Tom Magnier paid that amount for a brother to classy three-year-old Beadman who will be trained by Chris Waller, while earlier China Horse Club, Newgate and Clarke Bloodstock paid the same amount for a son of the Shamexpress mare Embrace Me.

Snitzel also had a filly out of Group 1 winner Krone sell to James Harron for $1.2m, the same price the Rising Sun Syndicate paid for a filly by I Am Invincible out of Key who will be trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Wednesday’s five seven-figure lots took to eight the number of yearlings who have sold for at least $1m across the first two days of a sale that has produced pleasing results for Magic Millions.

After the hammer fell on the Wednesday’s final lot, a tick under $94m had changed hands at an average of $288,267 with a median of $200,000 and a 83 percent clearance rate.
