The Chris Waller trained So Suave claimed his first career win in his fifth start as the $1.36 favourite with bookmaker swiftbet when taking out the opening race at Doomben today.
The three-year-old’s win is worthy of special mention on his breeding alone … the gelding being a son of Zed out of the broodmare Opulence.
Maybe that pedigree rings a bell.
It is a direct breeding line that makes So Suave a full brother to the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant, who concluded her career as a sixteen-time winner with stakes earnings of $14,882,524.
By the time Verry Elleegant had raced five times, she already had three wins behind her name, all the way up to Group 3 level, before going on to win multiple Group 1’s.
So Suave thus has the toughest of acts to follow …  but now that he has put that win on the board it will be interesting to see to what degree he can go on with it.
“Not a bad pedigree is it,” said Waller stable spokesman Brett Killion. “He is a late developer. We haven’t had him up here long (in Queensland), but he is a nice horse … he doesn’t turn a hair … from a very talented family.
“He came off a better form race at Kembla on a heavy track and he’s appreciated the better ground today.
“In another six month’s time I am sure he will go through the grades and get a bit of confidence up here .., and then I’m sure he will head back down south.”
Punters got a bit of a scare mid way through the straight but the $1.36 swiftbet favourite dug deep to score edging away in the concluding stages of the race.
