Day 4 top lot goes through towards end of monster session at Magic Millions

The Magic Millions yearling record set on Thursday lasted little more than 24 hours with a filly out of Sunlight setting a new mark late on Friday’s ‘super session’.

The daughter of Home Affairs got to $3.2 million before being knocked down to Japanese trainer Mitsu Nakauchida.

The filly assumed honours as the highest-priced yearling ever sold by Magic Millions from the colt by Snitzel out of Humma Humma, who sold for $2.8 million on Day 3.

Nakauchida was on-site bidding on the filly and is excited about training a member of what is rapidly becoming Australian bloodstock royalty in his stable, which includes Cox Plate runner-up Prognosis and Yankee Rose’s daughter Liberty Island.

“Mainly I came here for this filly and I just arrived yesterday. I was just lucky to secure the filly,” Nakauchida said.

“Physically she is good and you cannot fault the pedigree. I’m very happy.

“I expected to pay a high price and it is a little bit more than the budget but I hope the filly it worth it.

“She will go back to Japan and be trained with me. Hopefully she will make a nice racehorse.

“We will give her all the time she wants and hopefully she has the chance to mature herself in time.”

The result continued the amazing appeal of the family, largely determined by Sunlight, a three-time Group 1-winning daughter of Zoustar whose first foal, a colt by Justify who races as Dawn Service, sold for $1.4m in 2023.

The only more expensive yearlings sold in Australia are Winx’s first foal, who sold for $10m at Inglis Easter last year, and the $5m half-brother to Black Caviar and $4m Fastnet Rock colt from Easter 2013.

It was a dream result for Home Affairs, who obliterated the record for the highest-priced product of a first-season sire.

Home Affairs, who like Sunlight won a Coolmore Stud Stakes, stands at Coolmore, which is where Sunlight resides after being purchased for $4.2m off the track at the National Broodmare Sale, and Tom Magnier was thrilled with the result.

“Home Affairs, it is great for him, but we fcan’t do this without our partners. We’re so excited,” Magnier said.

“I think that is the best foal that the mare has had, it has been a cracker since day one.”

The Sunlight filly was one of two seven-figure lots in the final 30 minutes of Magic Millions’ longest-ever session of the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with a Snitzel filly selling for $1.6m 10 lots later.

That filly, who is out of the Bel Esprit mare Sweet Sherry, which makes her a half-sister to Eneeza, was bought by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, in partnership with Kestrel Thoroughbreds and John Stewart’s Resolute Bloodstock.

The two big late lots helped swell the sale gross to $205,470,000 with yearlings selling at an average of $272,507 with a $200,000 median and 81.5 percent clearance rate.

Last year’s sale grossed $225,778,000 at an average of $275,675 average with a $200,000 median and 88 percent clearance rate.
