It’s not often you hear someone who buys a horse for $1.25 million effectively label it a bargain, but that’s what Guy Mulcaster did after striking early on Day 4 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Chris Waller’s bloodstock agent paid that amount for the filly by I Am Invincible out of Group 1 winner Qafila.

The Coolmore-raised filly had long been touted as one of the headline lots of the fourth and final day of Book 1 and Mulcaster conceded he expected more competition for her.

“We actually really thought we were going to struggle to buy her, but it’s ended up all right for us,” he said.

“We had her tucked away for about a month and I just didn’t want to get too excited then Charlie (Duckworth, Waller’s racing manager) rang the man that was interested in her.

“It’s a lot of money…but I’m sure he’s going to be rapt when he sees her.”

The $1.25m filly was the second highest-priced filly of the sale when the hammer fell, behind Thursday’s $1.6m Snitzel filly, and Mulcaster and Waller were attracted by the versatility of her dam.

Qafila, a daughter of Not A Single Doubt, won the Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) on debut and then went on to upstage the boys in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at three.

“The thing that really got our attention was the fact she was so versatile,” Mulcaster said of Qafila.

“She ran in the first two-year-old race and ended up winning an Oaks (SA Derby), so we’ve got a few different paths we can take with her.

“We always thought she was just an athlete, she’s beautiful and has come off a great farm.”

Mulcaster’s buy is the fourth foal from Qafila, whose only two to race – Filadeel and Angel Eyes – are both winers.

The Qafila filly was one of two youngsters out of Not A Single Doubt mares that Mulcaster and Waller paid good money for early on Day 4, going to $700,000 for a colt by Anamoe out of the well-related Pretty Fast.

They also picked up an expensive Extreme Choice colt earlier in the sale, going to $1.2m for the youngster out of the I Am Invincible mare Dame Giselle on Day 1.
