Victorian jockeys dominate Karaka Millions meeting at Ellserslie

Leading jockeys Blake Shinn and Craig Williams stole the spotlight at the Karaka Millions meeting, claiming victory in both of the day’s feature races for powerhouse stable Te Akau Racing.

Williams set the tone, guiding La Dorada to a commanding win in the NZ$1m Karaka Millions 2YO, while Shinn followed suit 40 minutes later, taking out the NZ$1.5m Karaka Millions 3YO aboard race favourite Damask Rose.

Both victories highlighted Te Akau’s dominance in New Zealand racing, with the stable strategically securing the services of two of Australia’s top jockeys for their headline contenders.

Shinn’s win on Damask Rose was particularly satisfying, as the jockey had traveled to New Zealand a week earlier to prepare for the race. In challenging wet conditions at Ellerslie, Damask Rose powered home late, charging past Tuxedo and Dealt With to secure the coveted title.

“It’s a huge thrill to come here and win on a day like this,” Shinn said. “Te Akau is a phenomenal operation, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity.”

Meanwhile, La Dorada, the second favorite in the 2YO race, showcased professionalism under Williams, storming home to secure the win and cementing her place as an exciting prospect for Te Akau Racing.

Te Akau principal David Ellis praised both jockeys for their brilliant rides, acknowledging the significance of their performances on one of New Zealand racing’s biggest days.

“Craig and Blake were outstanding. It’s always special to win on Karaka Millions night, and to do so with two such professional riders is an honor,” Ellis said.

The Karaka Millions meeting once again underscored Te Akau’s dominance, as well as the growing impact of international jockeys on New Zealand’s premier race days.
