Victorian jockeys have declared they will no longer ride in unpaid jumpouts

Victorian jockeys, led by senior rider Damian Lane and supported by the Victorian Jockeys’ Association (VJA), have declared they will no longer ride in unpaid jumpouts from December 1 unless a payment structure is introduced.

The decision comes after years of unresolved discussions with Racing Victoria (RV).

“This is not a new topic of discussion and not a new problem that jockeys have been facing in Victoria,” said Lane.

“There’s no other industry where you go to work and do 10-20 hours of free labour every week. We’ve had enough.”

Jockeys argue they deserve the same remuneration for jumpouts as they receive for official trials, where riders are paid $110 per mount.

Lane emphasised that owners have benefited from free services for years.

“Where the money comes from is not our concern,” said Lane.

“The reality is owners have been getting a free kick with a free service for many a year now, and we want that service paid for.”

Trainers are divided on the issue.

Mick Price expressed concern that additional costs would be passed to owners.

“At the end of the day, the extra cost will be borne by the owner,” said Price.

Michael Kent offered a balanced view, suggesting payment schemes could improve efficiency and provide opportunities for less-experienced jockeys.

RV has urged stakeholders to negotiate but reiterated that payments are a matter between trainers and riders.

“RV supports the principle that all persons should be remunerated for work performed,” the organisation stated.
