Under-rated stayer Torrens has continued his spring form surge, taking out the inaugural running of The Beauford

Torrens has demonstrated his versatility and proven his recent stakes win was no fluke with another dominant staying performance in the $300,000 The Beauford.

One of the most improved horses in training, Torrens was getting beaten in benchmark races in Brisbane 12 months ago but since joining the Lauri Parker stable mid-year, he has risen through the ranks.

After scoring at Warwick Farm three starts ago, Torrens produced a barnstorming finish from off the speed to score an upset victory in the Listed City Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m) last month before dictating from the front to win Saturday’s 2300 metre feature at Newcastle.

In the saddle for all three wins has been mature-aged apprentice Jenny Duggan, who said her faith in Torrens’ stamina and his light weight convinced her to adopt front-running tactics.

“One thing we knew going into this is he’ll run the distance, so I wasn’t scared of taking it up,” Duggan said.

“That was my plan. Even the (strong) wind, I thought it’s going to come either way and he’s a big, strong stallion so he’ll manage.

“With 51 kilos on his back today, I thought I’ll let them work and we’ll see what happens.”

Torrens ($5) led from favourite Shared Ambition but had that horse off the bit and struggling before the home turn.

He extended his lead on straightening and cruised home four lengths ahead of Olympic Gaze ($61), who grabbed second, a long head in front of Hush Writer ($6).

Making the victory extra special was the presence of Duggan’s children, who were in the grandstand to cheer her home.

“I didn’t know they were coming so that’s a good treat,” Duggan said.

“I love this horse and I just can’t thank Lauri enough for the opportunity.”
