The top lot on Day 1 was a colt by I Am Invincible from Egyptian Symbol, who sold for $1.5 million

The highest-priced filly of the day going through eight lots from the end of the session capped a brilliant Day 1 of this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Cambridge Stud’s Brendan Lindsay paid $950,000 for the Segenhoe Stud-prepared filly by Zoustar from the Fastnet Rock mare Jolie Bay, who is a sister to Merchant Navy, as Lot 236.

The 213 yearlings who passed through the ring sold at 81 percent for a total of $66,410,000, which was almost $2 million more than last year’s opening day’s trade of $64,470,000, at an average of $383,873.

That was up on last year’s Day 1 average of $368,400 and the 2021 overall average of $368,945, while the Day 1 median of $300,000 was up on last year’s $280,000.

Inglis general manager of bloodstock Sebastian Hutch said it was a pleasing result, particularly given the expectation around what might follow on Wednesday second day.

“Any day you can come out of a sale day with figures we have today you can’t be anything other than pleased,” Hutch said.

“There were a lot of nice horses in the sale, they sold well and a really good reflection of the day was the median was up 15 percent on the same day last year and I think that’s the best way of illustrating the strength and depth of the market.

“If you asked any of us to nominate which was going to be the stronger of the two days, it was going to be the second day, that’s just the way the lots fell.”

The top lot on Day 1 was a colt by I Am Invincible from Egyptian Symbol, who sold for $1.5 million, while Snitzel and Written Tycoon both had colts sell for $1.4 million.

The two $1.4 million colts were bought by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier, who also paid $1 million for an I Am Invincible colt, and was leading buyer by aggregate ($3.8 million) and average ($1,266,667) for those who bought at least three lots.

Ciaron Maher Racing purchased more horses than any other buyer, spending $2,305,000 across seven yearlings, including the day’s top lot.

Arrowfield Stud moved $10,085,000 worth of stock, selling 22 of the 24 youngsters it had in on Day 1, while Vinery – which sold the $1.4 million Written Tycoon colt – was the leading vendor by average of those who sold at least three yearlings, selling five at an average of $619,000.
