Tim Clark is on the verge of achieving his season goal at Canterbury on Wednesday with more than two months to spare.

The in-form jockey set himself the target of 50 city winners at the start of this season and he currently sits on 49.5 with a strong book of Canterbury rides waiting.

“I think I rode 36 winners last season and I thought 50 would be maybe a bit ambitious but I thought if I targeted something around that mark, if I came up a bit short I wasn’t going to be too disappointed,” Clark said.

“Things have gone pretty well for me though and I’ve been able to get the results.”

The 24-year-old, who sits fifth on the Sydney jockeys’ premiership, admits he has probably exceeded his own expectations being on the brink of a half century which has included two Group Ones and another 11 at stakes level.

“Obviously the massive highlight for me was getting the two Group One winners on Doncaster day including the Doncaster on Sacred Choice,” he said.

“That was a career highlight, but apart from that I think I’ve ridden more consistently this season. In the past I’ve probably ridden a bit patchy but I think I’ve ridden less bad races this year.”

Clark’s Canterbury hopes include imported galloper Wazn in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1550m) and the Les Bridge-trained Hot Snap in the TJ’s Champagne Bar Handicap (1900m).

Clark rode the Chris Waller-trained French import Wazn in his Australian debut at Warwick Farm on May 4 and was impressed with the four-year-old’s 2-1/2-length victory over 1600 metres.

“Before the race he was a bit of an unknown, even to Chris, but he was never going to get beaten that day from the time the gates opened,” Clark said.

“He jumped well, travelled well and then quickened nicely.

“If he turns up the same horse tomorrow he’ll probably be my best ride of the day and I think he might progress through the grades like a lot of those imported horses have from Chris’ stable.”

Hot Snap carries the same red and green colours that were worn throughout the career of Clark’s favourite horse Hot Danish, who lost her battle with an infection caused by a leg injury and had to be put down the day after the hoop’s Doncaster day heroics.

Hot Snap raced closer to the speed at Canterbury on May 7 with Brenton Avdulla on board, finishing over seven lengths behind the winner Legsman in fifth place.

Clark says the four-year-old is likely to be ridden more conservatively on Wednesday.

“We’ll probably just go back and ride him quieter tomorrow,” Clark said.

“He raced up on the speed from a good gate last start but it was a fast-run race and it brought him unstuck a bit.”

The jockey also rides Titbit (race two), Stubborn (race three), Strike Power (race four) and Baabulu (race seven) at the midweek fixture.
