Agriculture Victoria is currently investigating a series of sudden deaths in horses that have occurred over the past 13 days in Victoria.
Racing Victoria has issued a warning to licensed trainers, advising them to be vigilant as the cause of these deaths is being investigated.
Up to 10 horses have reportedly died on three separate properties located in the Mornington Peninsula.
The exact cause of the deaths is unknown at this time, and investigations are ongoing.
Victoria’s chief veterinary officer, Dr. Graeme Cooke, has stated that the investigation is still in its early stages.
“The investigation is in the early stages. It is not yet known what has caused these deaths and to date common links are not evident,” Dr Cooke said.
“While we do not yet have any clear indication of the cause, early testing for some known diseases in horses has been negative.
“Multiple horse deaths on a single property are uncommon. When they occur, investigations prioritise infectious causes and ingestion of toxins, however it is not always possible to definitively identify a cause.”
Trainers have been advised to contact their local veterinarian if they observe sudden deaths or the sudden onset of illness in their horses.
