It is not the biggest success at Caulfield for the family, but Sketch scored a significant win in the Sportsbet Jockey Watch Plate that kicked off Wednesday’s meeting on The Heath track.
The daughter of Brazen Beau registered the first win of her career in the 1600-metre event for three-year-old maiden gallopers.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained filly is out of the Street Cry mare Illustrate, which makes her a half-sister to Blue Diamond winner Daumier, and top jockey Craig Williams was pleased to play his part in the win that will aid her breeding profile.
“The bigger picture is breeding, so that’s a great way to win her maiden by having a city win for her as well,” Williams said.
Sketch’s win came at start number five and followed minor placings at Kilmore and Ballarat over 1200m and 1400m respectively at her first two starts for the Freedmans, following two earlier unplaced starts for James Cummings.
Sketch started $1.65 favourite on Wednesday off the back of those performances and after jumping well, Williams was content to take a sit behind the leaders before extricating his way to the outside rounding the home turn.
Sketch was strongest in the home straight, scoring by three-quarters-of-a-length from Icaro ($9) with Sky Deel ($15) 1-3/4 lengths further back third.
“She had the nice run, she jumped out of the gates and gave me some options early and she was solid through the line,” Williams said.
“She had no problem today settling out to the mile, it was a slowly run race and she picked up when I needed her to.”
