Gordon Richards will unveil close relations to two of the best horses he’s ever trained at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
Gwyllgi, a son of Gytrash’s half-sister Outlaw Miss, and Bold Star’s full-sister Bold Starlet will make their respective debuts in the 1250m maiden.
Richards said both three-year-olds have talent, although he expects that his training partner Damian Moyle will learn more about their pair after Saturday.
“I’m happy with them both and I think they both trialed pretty good the other day,” Richards said.
“Horses have to be super special to win at their first start but as long as they pick up some experience from it and we learn about them, that’s what we’re hoping for.”
A son of Fierce Impact that was purchased for $50,000 at the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Gwyllgi out of Group 1 winner Gytrash’s half-sister Outlaw Miss, making him a half-brother to stablemate Mesrour.
Richards said the youngster has been cantankerous and a handful at times, although his recent gallops and trial at Murray Bridge have displayed glimpses of talent.
“He’s precocious,” he said.
“He bucks all the way around the track in the morning and tries to drop Alana but when she gets over his neck to work him, he’s into business.
“We’ve been more interested in getting him to go around the track without bucking her off and all of a sudden this horse with a bit of ability has bobbed up.
“He showed us in his trial that he’s got a bit so if he can keep improving, we might have some fun.”
Of Bold Starlet, the Adelaide horseman said there are several similar traits she shares with her Stakes-winning sibling.
She was bought for $45,000 at the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale.
“I’ve always been of the opinion that the Needs Further fillies are better than the colts and this filly is a full-sister to Bold Star who I’ve always thought has been one of the better ones by Needs Further.
“They are pretty similar but she’s probably a bigger, leggier type.
“He (Bold Star) took four starts to win his maiden and he didn’t show a great deal early so I think she’s probably shown more than him at this stage.
“I know it wasn’t a flash field (in the trial) but she put them away when she was asked to do something.”
