Here is what is making news this Thursday morning:
- The Australian Turf Club is disappointed with the number of acceptances for Saturday’s meeting at Rosehill. Only 79 horses have been accepted for the nine race card.
- Auckland Cup runner up Showcause will come to Australia for the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), with the long term aim of running in this year’s or next year’s Melbourne Cup.
- Form analysts and racing personalities are divided over whether Black Caviar is the best horse ever to race in Australia. While they all agree that she is probably the best sprinter, most believe it is futile comparing her to middle distance and staying champions.
- Team Hawkes will unveil a strong hand this weekend, starting with Black Caviar’s brother Moshe on Friday night at Moonee Valley. They are still not sure if Shadowofexcellence will go to Melbourne for the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) or a 1900m 0-75 handicap at Canterbury – the latter option set Maluckyday towards the Melbourne Cup, so they are considering it strongly. Maluckyday will run in this Saturday’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes, but they believe he is underdone.
- Only four rivals will take on More Joyous in the Canterbury Stakes
- Golden Slipper markets are unlikely to change too much if Sepoy and Satin Shoes win the Todman and Reisling Stakes as expected
- TVN is considering increasing their offer for Sky Racing.
- There may be more than seven months until the Melbourne Cup, but Simon O’Donnell and Terry Henderson’s OTI Racing is already preparing their entries for the race. They have purchased Chilean Derby runner up Sahara Sun with the aim of racing in the Cups. He will be trained by Luca Cumani, who is also preparing Manighar to return to Melbourne. He is also expected to bring former French mare Never Forget.
- Lisa Cropp will return to riding at Sale today following a skull fracture
- Robbie Waterhouse has taken a TAB Fixed Odds dispute to NSW stewards
