The Peter Snowden-trained two-year-old Burnout could be bound for a Queensland winter campaign after he resumed with an impressive win at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Lonhro colt had run seventh to Dinner Date in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) on a slow track at Sandown at his only previous outing last spring.

“The race didn’t fall his way at his first start at 1000 metres and again today he was run off his legs,” assistant trainer Paul Snowden said.

“It was wet that day and he didn’t really like it but he found the line well today.

“He’ll run over 1400 metres in a couple of weeks and we’ll toss up the idea of whether we put the shades (blinkers) on him or save them for later, but he’ll definitely have them on eventually.”

“He’s a lovely horse.”

Burnout ($6.50) showed little speed early and was a clear last of the six runners in the Shadwell Estate Co (UK) Cup (1200m).

Jockey James Winks guided him through a gap at the top of the straight and he went on to score by a comfortable 1-1/4 lengths from Caravaggio ($5.50) with Eight Stars ($10) a long head away third.

“I said to Winksy he’d run out of his skin today but he’s still a big kid in his head and I think the blinkers will make a massive difference to him for later,” Snowden said.

He said had Burnout not won on Saturday he would have been a certainty beaten but his next run in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on April 25 would determine whether he goes on to Queensland.

Winks was quite impressed with Burnout.

“He’s a big dumb bugger and races that way,” he said.

“He got competitive with Craig Newitt’s mount (Caravaggio) when it made its run and he put the race beyond doubt in a couple of bounds.

“He’s just not there yet and will be a good horse when he knows what to do.”
