Newgate and GPI have confirmed that Darby Racing’s star sprinter Overpass will line up in their slot for the 2025 TAB Everest, with the seven-year-old gelding set to tackle the $20 million feature first-up.
A Group 1-winner who has amassed more than $10 million in prizemoney, Overpass has built a reputation for producing his best performances fresh.
“We are thrilled to have Overpass in the Newgate/GPI TAB Everest slot. The plan will be to run him first-up this preparation in the TAB Everest. He is a horse that is exceptionally effective first-up having won the Sydney Stakes on Everest day last year in faster time than the Everest was won. He was also dynamite first-up in the autumn when narrowly beaten in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes,” Darby Racing’s Scott Darby said.
Newgate’s Managing Director Henry Field added: “We feel that Overpass is a logical choice for us this year, given he is such a high-class sprinter that turns up preparation after preparation and is always competitive at the highest level.”
Trainer Bjorn Baker has long been an advocate for keeping Overpass fresh and is excited about targeting the Everest as a first-up assignment. “Bjorn Baker is very keen to run the horse first-up in the TAB Everest and by locking him in for the slot now it will allow the horse to be trained with the one goal in mind,” Field said.
Overpass will complete one final trial in early October before stepping out in the 2025 TAB Everest, where he will aim to add racing’s richest sprint to his impressive résumé.
