A change of game plan has paid dividends for Coys

A change of game plan has paid dividends for Coys with the gelding showing a liking for running on the speed.

The five-year-old, named in honour of the Come On You Spurs chant associated with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, has reached a new level of consistency in a campaign that began in March.

He returns to Randwick on Saturday for a rare Saturday metropolitan start in the Benchmark 82 Handicap (1800m) which will mark the end of an eight-race preparation.

“He’s been pretty faultless really, very consistent,” trainer Marc Conners said.

The Warwick Farm trainer said the only blemish was a distant last over 1600m at Wyong when he was found to have cardiac arrhythmia.

Coys recovered, trialled and then won over the same distance at Wyong in next start.

He recorded the most recent of his five career victories at Canterbury on October 27 over 1900m.

“The horse has just got a bit more mature, stronger and we’ve ridden him more forward this preparation.” Conners said.

That revised racing pattern has helped deliver a win and three minor placings from his past four starts.

Coys peaked at 2100m two starts ago at Wyong and after a third over 1900m at Canterbury last month he has earned a fourth start at Randwick.

“We dropped him back in trip to get a nice big track at Randwick. It’s probably like a 1900 anyway,” Conners said.

Conners also hoped the rain would stick around in Sydney given Coys’ liking for rain-affected tracks.

“We’ll give him a nice break now and come back in the late autumn where he’ll gets soft tracks to suit him,” Conners said.

He was happy to draw barrier three in the field of 13 believing Coys was set up to drive and roll forward.

Coys has posted prize money of $220,275 from 30 starts, numbers that earn him stable favourite status.

“I’d love another half dozen of him,” Conners said.
