Racing NSW has confirmed that Group 1 winner Ceolwulf will undergo additional diagnostic testing after blood was observed following his run in the Apollo Stakes on Saturday.
Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Carly Garling informed stewards that, after consultations with trainer Joe Pride’s stable veterinarian and a specialist equine surgeon, the gelding will be transferred to a specialist equine hospital for a thorough examination.
Stewards will assess the findings alongside Dr Garling before deciding whether Australian Rule 79, which governs bleeding incidents, should be applied. Under AR79, any instance of blood from both nostrils is classified as a bleeding attack unless it is clearly the result of external trauma, leading to mandatory stand-down periods.
If Ceolwulf is confirmed to have bled, the rule stipulates a two-month prohibition from training and a three-month ban from racing. He would only be eligible to return after successfully completing a gallop, trial or jump-out to the satisfaction of stewards.
