Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the influential Dubai royal and globally respected thoroughbred owner whose colours were carried to victory in Australia’s most famous race, has died.
A cousin of Dubai ruler and Godolphin founder Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s death was confirmed to Darley directors on Monday night (UK time).
He holds a significant place in Australian racing history as the owner of Without A Fight, who delivered a memorable triumph in the 2023 Melbourne Cup for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman.
That victory capped a remarkable spring carnival, with Without A Fight also claiming the Caulfield Cup, completing one of the most prestigious doubles in Australian racing.
Beyond Australia, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid’s impact on the global thoroughbred industry was profound. He bred champion sire Dubawi and owned a host of elite racehorses, including 1998 Epsom Derby winner High-Rise, as well as international stars Postponed and Rosallion.
His racing interests spanned Australia, Britain and the Middle East, reflecting the increasingly global nature of elite thoroughbred racing and breeding.
