Selkrig gained national recognition with his unexpected triumph aboard Lord Fury at 20/1 odds in the 1961 Melbourne Cup, leading from start to finish. His success extended beyond that iconic race, as he also secured four Australian Derbies, with victories ranging from Prince Delville in 1954 to Gold Brick in 1972.
On Thursday, Selkrig succumbed to a long illness, leaving a lasting legacy in the racing community. In recognition of his immense contributions to the thoroughbred racing industry, he was awarded a Medal of Australia in 2018, honoring his services in various roles.
