Melbourne Cup winner Shocking has been retired and will stand at Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand this spring.
Bought for $45,000 by Laurence Eales, the son of Street Cry won almost $5 million in prize money from 27 starts for seven wins and another eight placings.
Among his seven wins were the 2009 Melbourne Cup and the 2011 Australian Cup (2000m), both on his home track at Flemington where he was most effective.
He also won the Group Two Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Group Three Lexus Stakes (2500m) and was runner-up in the Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m), all at Flemington.
Shocking also finished second in the Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm.
“His win in the Australian Cup was excellent and he’s been retired while he’s in good health and in good order,” trainer Mark Kavanagh said of the five-year-old.
“He’s going to stand at stud at Rich Hill alongside Pentire so he’s got a good chance.
“It was a good opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting some of his stock in my stable.
“He graduated to a weight-for-age horse after winning a Melbourne Cup.
“It was a magnificent win in the Australian Cup, his turn of foot was unbelievable.
“You don’t get much better than that.
“It was a good time to let him rest on his laurels, he’d done enough and he was in such devastating form, then we got the offer and we decided to go with it.”
