James McDonald didn’t envy the predicament Mark Zahra faced during the weekend but remains hopeful that his rival has made the wrong choice for the upcoming Melbourne Cup. McDonald, who is set to ride Gold Trip in the $8 million handicap, expressed his optimism about the stayer’s (Gold Trip) chances.
Reflecting on the decision, McDonald acknowledged Zahra’s challenging choice between horses, but he believes Gold Trip’s performance makes him a formidable contender in the Melbourne Cup 2023. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Gold Trip, who McDonald will be aboard, has shown tremendous promise.
“I’m very fortunate to pick up such a great ride, and he’s going to be awfully hard to beat,” McDonald stated. He also shared his understanding of Zahra’s decision to stick with Without A Fight, the Caulfield Cup winner, despite having previously ridden Gold Trip to victory in last year’s Melbourne Cup.
“I have ridden Gold Trip in a Sydney Cup before – that was at the end of his last preparation so I have had a feel of him and know him a little bit, so that helps,” McDonald added.
McDonald, who emerged victorious in the 2021 Melbourne Cup aboard Verry Elleegant, believes that Gold Trip’s impressive performances make him a strong contender for this year’s race. Currently rated as the $4.00 favourite with online betting sites, Gold Trip is poised to make a significant impact in the prestigious event. The anticipation continues to build as the final field for the Melbourne Cup is set to be declared on Saturday following the Archer Stakes.
