Another part of Mawzoona’s education will be complete if the filly can add a Sandown victory to recent success on the provincial circuit.
Dispatched from the Sydney stable of Peter and Paul Snowden to their Melbourne base, Mawzoona has won at Mornington and Kilmore at her past two outings.
On Saturday she will attempt the hat-trick when she runs in the Ladbrokes Cash In Handicap (1300m).
Paul Snowden said the stable had always held Mawzoona in high regard and felt she was capable of scoring at city grade, but chose to send her south feeling the races were a touch easier than those in Sydney.
“Ability wise she’s always been a city class horse,” Snowden said.
“She’s always gone well but she had no luck in her races in Sydney.
“She could have won in Sydney, no worries at all, but we sent her down to Melbourne as we feel it’s a tad weaker at the moment where she’s been and it’s taught her how to win.”
Mawzoona won in maiden grade at Mornington before claiming a Class One win at Kilmore where she was untroubled under Michael Dee who has the ride again on Saturday.
“She probably could have got to the city before her last start but the races didn’t fall her way 100 per cent, but after she won at Kilmore this race presented as lovely timing,” Snowden said.
Ultimately Snowden would like to get the filly up to a stakes race for owner Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.
But he says the stable is in no hurry to achieve that believing the three-year-old can continue on an upward spiral.
“She’s got no rating as yet and needs to build that and who knows how deep into the prep she’ll get,” Snowden said.
“She’s a very gross filly that does well around the stable but it’s not surprising to see her do this as we’ve always held a good opinion of her.
“Possibly an early autumn stakes races would be a nice target, something at Listed grade, would be fantastic for her.
“It would be good for the family as she’s one of the Sheikh’s home-breds.”
