Mark Kavanagh is eagerly waiting to see some of his unraced two-year-olds make their first appearances over the winter so he can assess them ahead of the spring carnival.
“The only bit of excitement you’ll see come out of my place in the next few weeks is a lot of well bred two-year-olds come through and have have one or two starts and try and qualify for the spring,” Kavanagh said.
“I had a $NZ2 million one last week and I’ve got Makybe Diva’s second foal coming up in the next few weeks.
The $NZ2 million youngster was Zephyron, a colt by Zabeel out of Diamond Like who ran fourth to Sabrage over 1200 metres on a heavy track at Caulfield last Saturday.
Makybe Diva’s second foal, a filly by Fusaichi Pegasus, was purchased for $1.2 million at the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.
Meanwhile Kavanagh will endeavour to keep the pot boiling at Flemington on Saturday with four runners including Liveandletdie in the Straight Six (1200m).
The Street Cry colt won a three-year-old 1200m event on April 25 before finishing third under 58.5kg to Pitt Street, at his home track of Flemington.
He will carry the minimum (53kg) in the 1200m Listed feature and will be ridden by Stephen Baster.
“He drops 5.5 kg on his last start and he’s a winner down the straight,” Kavanagh said.
“Dubleanny will be hard to beat in that race, but I think he’ll run well.”
The Mick Price-trained Dubleanny is out to complete a hat-trick after wins over 1200 metres at Flemington on April 25 and in the Listed Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 8.
The imported December Draw, who surprised the stable with his first up win over at Flemington on May 7, will run in the Banjo Paterson Series Heat 1 (2000m) with Baster again the rider.
“He’s a nice surprise package that’s come from overseas. It was a good win last start,” Kavanagh said.
“The 2000 metres will probably suit him better. He’s still down in the weights and he’s trained on nicely.
“Hopefully he can go on with it.”
Too Deadly, who has finished second to Niblick over 1400 metres at Flemington and fourth to Wookah over the same trip at Caulfield, runs in the K A Morrison Hcp (1600m).
“He’s been racing against older horses at his past couple and the drop back to three-year-old grade should suit him,” Kavanagh said.
The gelding will be ridden by Ben Melham while Baster goes on Rain Shadow, a 2000m Caulfield winner in February.
