Lawrie Mayfield Smith celebrated Luskin Hero's Ipswich win from his hospital bed

Eagle Farm trainer Lawrie Mayfield Smith again showed his professionalism when he celebrated Luskin Hero’s Ipswich win from his hospital bed.

Mayfield Smith was waiting to go into surgery for an appendix operation as Luskin Hero won on debut in a two-year-old maiden over 1100m.

Mayfield Smith was able to watch Luskin Hero parade and race on his mobile phone.

“I have a lot of time for this horse. He has never been beaten in trials, jump outs and now a race,” Mayfield-Smith said.

“I feel like the hospital is my second home these days. But the operation is at a time I could watch him parade as I just wanted to supervise how he took to his first day at the races.

“I have been doing it a bit tough but there is nothing like a good horse to spark you up and this bloke might be it.”

Luskin Hero is raced on lease by Mayfield-Smith’s long time friend and owner Paul ‘Porky’ Alroe.

Mayfield-Smith is the middle brother of three renowned trainers with Brian the elder and Noel the youngest.

He has been a leading Brisbane trainer for three decades and secured many stakes wins with the likes of Post Elect, Sonata, Reputed Groom, Fine Spy and Appleton Gold.

Toowoomba trainer Rex Lipp had a double with his two-year-olds but not before some post-race drama after the second success.

After jumping to the lead his filly Bad Barista ($5.50) went on to win a two-year-old maiden by 3-3/4 lengths.

Bad Barista ran to the outside 100m past the winning post and dislodged jockey Emma Ljung over the fence.

Ljung was shaken and bruised but apparently avoided major injury.

Lipp also continued his success with the family of the broodmare Royal Shiraz when Real Fine Wine ($3.50) won the QTIS 2YO (800m).

Real Fine Wine’s dam Star Drop was a five-time winner and is a daughter of Royal Shiraz, who has been a prolific producer of winners including smart mare Our Beebee.

Jockey Brad Stewart bounced back after standing down from his final rides at Toowoomba on Tuesday to ride his sixth winner for the week on Countess De Galvez ($7.50) in the Sky Racing Plate.

Stewart missed his final four rides at Toowoomba after complaining of foot discomfort but was passed fit to ride.
