The dominance of Australia’s two powerhouse stables has again been highlighted in the entry list for this year’s Melbourne Cup, with Chris Waller and Ciaron Maher responsible for a third of the nominations.
When nominations closed on Tuesday, Waller had submitted a record 27 entries from his Rosehill base, while Maher lodged 13 for the $10 million feature at Flemington.
Together, their combined tally of 40 horses accounts for 33 per cent of the 120 nominations received by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) for the nation’s most famous race.
The overall figure is just short of last year’s total of 123, but once again underscores the influence of the Waller and Maher operations on Australia’s biggest staying contest.
