Damian Lane recorded his eighth Group 1 victory of the season with a brilliant ride aboard Treasurethe Moment in the ATC Australian Oaks at Randwick on Saturday, but the win was followed by a suspension and fine for breaching whip regulations.
According to the Racing NSW stewards’ report, Lane pleaded guilty to overuse of the whip, having struck Treasurethe Moment 20 times in total, including 10 times before the final 100 metres of the 2400m contest.
As a result, Lane was handed a two-week suspension and fined $10,000 by stewards.
Treasurethe Moment finished powerfully to run down the leaders and collect her third Group 1 success of the season, while also stretching her winning streak to eight consecutive victories.
Lane’s suspension takes effect immediately, with the champion jockey eligible to resume race riding on Sunday, April 27.
