Jockey Kristy Bennett remains in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Gold Coast University Hospital following a serious fall at the Gold Coast trials earlier this week.
An update issued by the Queensland Jockeys’ Association confirmed Bennett is expected to remain in ICU for at least the next two weeks as she continues her recovery.
“Irene (Kristy’s mother) and Bella (her sister) wish to thank the incredible doctors, nurses and staff at the Gold Coast University Hospital for the amazing care Kristy is receiving and send thanks to the Australian racing community for their prayers and well wishes,” the statement read.
“Irene and Bella also send special thanks to Tony Gollan and his staff who have been a tower of strength for the family, as have the Gold Coast Turf Club and Racing Queensland.”
Bennett suffered a fall involving a horse following a trial on Tuesday and was treated on course by medical personnel before being transported to hospital by ambulance.
The rider had recently relocated from Western Australia to Queensland in an effort to further her career and had been riding trackwork for leading trainer Tony Gollan along with several other stables on the Gold Coast.
In a separate incident, jockey Luke Rolls was transported to hospital following a fall at Taree on Friday.
Rolls was fitted with a cervical collar by medical staff at the track before being taken for precautionary assessment and further examination.
The racing industry continues to rally around Bennett and her family as she remains under specialist care.
