World champion sprinter Ka Ying Rising is being monitored by Hong Kong Jockey Club veterinarians after developing a minor left hind hoof problem ahead of his scheduled return at Sha Tin on Sunday.
The David Hayes-trained star is due to resume in the Chief Executive’s Cup, which is set to be his only competitive appearance before travelling to Australia to defend his title in The Everest at Randwick next month.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club issued an update on Wednesday confirming bruising had been detected in Ka Ying Rising’s left hind hoof.
As part of the veterinary protocols associated with his upcoming Everest campaign, Ka Ying Rising was sedated and underwent diagnostic imaging on Tuesday, with those examinations also assisting veterinarians in assessing the hoof issue.
HKJC head of veterinary clinical services Dr Bronte Forbes reported that the problem had already shown improvement, although the sprinter will continue to be closely monitored before Sunday’s race.
“Dr Forbes confirmed the condition has improved and KA YING RISING will continue to be monitored by the Club Veterinary Surgeons and will be subject to further veterinary assessment … prior to the running of The HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup,” the release stated.
Importantly, Hayes has indicated the issue has not forced any change to Ka Ying Rising’s preparation.
“Trainer Mr D A Hayes has advised that the minor condition has not interrupted the horse’s training regime and KA YING RISING is scheduled to gallop [on Thursday].”
Sunday’s Chief Executive’s Cup remains an important stepping stone for Ka Ying Rising, with the champion sprinter expected to head to Sydney following his seasonal return as he attempts to win The Everest for the second consecutive year.
