Jockey Daniel Jack Smith has been relicensed by Racing NSW after completing a five-year disqualification imposed over a series of betting offences committed while riding in the Northern Territory.
Smith, who was previously known as Terry Treichel, was banned after pleading guilty to 32 charges, comprising 30 betting-related offences and two counts of making false declarations.
After relocating from New South Wales to the Northern Territory in 2019, Smith legally changed his name by deed poll to Daniel Jack Smith but continued riding under the name Terry Treichel while using his new legal identity to establish betting accounts.
The offences included 27 bets placed on races in which he was a rider between July 2019 and December 2020.
Authorities also found Smith had placed a further 168 bets on other races through a Sportsbet account, along with additional wagers via Neds and PointsBet.
As a result, he received a five-year disqualification for the betting offences, while the two false declaration charges attracted a concurrent three-year ban.
The penalty was backdated to December 18, 2020, the date on which his riding licence was initially suspended.
With the disqualification officially expiring on December 18 last year, Racing NSW confirmed on its website on Thursday that Smith has now been relicensed and is eligible to resume his riding career.
