Jockey Luke Nolen is set for multiple surgeries following a heavy fall at Geelong last Thursday.
The incident occurred when Nolen’s stirrup leather snapped, causing him to fall and be struck by another horse.
Initial injuries included fractured ribs, a broken nose, and facial damage, but further scans revealed an ankle fracture that requires immediate surgery.
Victorian Jockeys’ Association head Matt Hyland confirmed the timeline.
“Luke’s got to go in for surgery this afternoon on a fracture in his ankle.” Hyland told RSN.
“Next Tuesday, he’s having surgery on his broken nose, so he’s got a bit ahead of him over the coming week.”
The ankle fracture, missed during initial treatment, was later identified by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ben Baressi.
Hyland noted the thorough care Nolen is receiving under Dr. Andrew Oppy, saying, “Hopefully, once his surgeries are done, he can get on the road to recovery.”
Nolen remains optimistic about returning for the Autumn Carnival despite an extended layoff.
